Nonis using depth to go shopping....

I don't think the Luongo deal is going to happen.  I mean if those reports about pressure to make a Luongo deal were true, we'd be hearing all sorts of leaks from the usual sources (Dreger etc).  I'd imagine if the deal was to be made, the Leafs would want it done before game 1 which means right now.

It might, and I know I'm opening up some joke material but I don't want to give up practically anything to get him. If the Leafs somehow address their needs over the next couple years, which is far from a sure thing, that leaves a very small window for Luongo to really matter.

I'm with you my friend.

We had all these goalie prospects you would hope one of them develops.  What's Owuya up to these days?  between Rynnas, Owuya and Sparks one would hope that one of them takes the reigns in a few years when and if the Leafs have talent enough to be called a contender.

I dunno, they managed to keep the lid on Burke's situation pretty square, hard to say without a whack of assumptions built in.

Like I said in another thread, I have a feeling that the opportunity to make that trade is starting to slip away.

Gillis appears to be ready to gamble that once the season starts other teams will recognize a need to upgrade in net and give him more than whats being offered by the Leafs or Panthers.

I think the risk is too high, for me anyway. I still believe Reims and Scrivens will be good.

I tend to agree with the first bit - but I am not sold that Reimer and Scrivens will be an NHL caliber duo. The Leafs need to do something about goaltending, but I can't imagine that Luongo works out long term. Considering that's what the team really should be building for...

Gillis must be a gambling man.  I don't think he'll be able to get more value for Luongo than right now.  If he waits and the season plays out where Schneider is really good, the cap is going down next year and he has to get rid of Luongo.  Teams all know this, they won't offer more in the off-season for Luongo.  With only a 48 game schedule I think GMs might be more inclined to wait until the summer.  When is new trading deadline anyhow?  It can't be that far off.

I hope you're right on this. Gillis is taking a big gamble, and I'd love to see it blow up in his face.

While it would be so great to see the Leafs back in playoffs, Im okay with Reimer/Scrivens for year.. If we fail then a top 5 pick is not the worst thing.. If we give up youngens and picks for Luongo and he fails we are screwed way more

I don't know what the best situation is for this problem, because I do have fears about our young duo, but at the same time, Luongo kills one of their futures and comes with other greater risks (age, contract and the acquisition cost).

I wonder what Martin Gerber is doing?

I would prefer the Leafs didn't trade depth for that albatross contract. To give up anything significant for a player who is likely going to be bought out next offseason if he isn't traded is not too wise. Then again, desperation makes people do strange things. That said, I am not averse to the Leafs finishing near the bottom of the standings again this year.

Another bottom 5 finish could cause Kessel and Lupul to decide they don't want to be a part of this mess, which would set the team back even further.

Good point. A continued retool may be required to keep the talent that is actually still here. A full rebuild might be the equivalent of starting from scratch.

Maybe, you'd have to be involved in the discussion to really know that and make an appropriate decision though.

Losing those two would hurt but this team needs more than them to be successful, moving them wouldn't be impossible and setting the team back, though not the plan I'm sure, wouldn't be a bad thing if it was done correctly.
