Official Ottawa Senators Thread

One of the things they sort of suggested on the 31 thoughts podcast was that Tampa may have been the only team Karlsson was willing to sign long term with. That may have essentially forced Ottawa's hand here.

It may also make sense hockey wise as if you've got Hedman, Stralman, McDonogh and Karlsson...do you even need Sergachev?

Certainly hard to justify a guy like Sergachev toiling on the 3rd pairing when he's likely to get 12-14 minutes a night with those guys out there.

So ignoring roster players involved in a potential trade (guys like Coburn making 3.7M, Girardi making 3.0M, Tyler Johnson 5.0M, Killorn 4.5M) a straight up add Karlsson and subtract noone, keeping Sergachev as their 7th D-Man the Lightning would be a few hundred thousand over the cap with 10 forwards.  I would imagine they are trying to move one of Killorn/Johnson in the deal as a roster player so that would free up the money necessary to cheap out their 10-11-12-13th forwards to fit under the cap.  Moving one of Coburn/Girardi would also work for them but I would imagine their value would be considerably less, especially in the setting of trying to acquire Karlsson.  They would still be deep with their forwards with either kind of move.

What would be interesting would be the next year.  Hypothetically Karlsson loves Tampa, he signs a team friendly 10M/7-8 year extension.  They would be sitting at 69M in cap hit with only 6 forwards and 3 defensemen under contract.  Kucherov and Brayden Point as RFAs and Stralman, Coburn, Girardi as UFAs.

They would have to move a lot of pieces to make the team work beyond this year.

I was just thinking the same thing. Who do they move to make space and how do they realistically plug the holes they created? Can you keep Kucherov at that point?

TSN's Shawn Simpson is reporting the trade might be done and pending trade call, a cording to his source:

Friedman also says no.  I just want it to be over so we can complain about the Toronto/Tampa second round.

He tweeted this at 10pm last night, so that much be a hell of a trade call.

Can someone from the West please step up and take Karlsson so Tampa doesn't get him.  Like c'mon Vegas I'm looking at you.

The tough part of this is I think it's pretty clear that Karlsson wants to go to Tampa, so who knows how willing he would be to sign an extension with Vegas or Dallas. I don't think they up their offers unless a new contract comes along with it.

He's gonna go west and he's gonna like it.

Hey stop that.  He's being moved in part because his wife was cyber-bullied.  He doesn't need it from you too.

;D Like Karlsson is reading our forum.  I'm just looking out for the Leafs best interests.  Also the main reason he's leaving is cause Melnyk is a huge shmuck.

I actually think it's in our best interest to have Karlsson in Tampa. Nothing worse for a team of our caliber trying to prepare for the playoffs than a cakewalk through the regular season.

Our division:
Senators: broke poop
Red Wing: old poop
Montreal: caca
Sabres: interesting poop
Bruins: one line + poop
Panthers: good top six, goalie might break
Lightning: good top 9, top 3 blue line with Karlsson, top young goalie

It also makes their cap situation extremely difficult. Assuming Karlsson signs for the same as Doughty, depending on which contracts they move as part of the deal(s) to acquire him, they could have $69M of cap space committed to 6 forwards, 3 dmen, and their goalies going into 19/20 - and that doesn't include Kucherov's of Point's next contracts, which will have to be signed next summer.

It doesn't make a huge world of difference but I think the assumption there re: Karlsson's new deal is a pretty big one. With Stamkos getting 8.5 and his buddy Hedman getting 7.875 or whatever it is, I'd imagine there'd be a ton of pressure for the new guy in the room not to blow up the team's existing salary structure.

Wow, guys, I'm as excited as anyone but let's at least you know actually win a playoff round before dismissing everybody else but Tampa.  Talk about hoooooooobris.

Yeah, I think Tampa only works if they know Karlsson's willing to take the same sort of pay cuts.

Even if he comes in at around $8.25M, with Kucherov and Point needing contracts, that's still a tight squeeze. They'd basically have to blow up their existing depth.

It seems safe to assume that one of Johnson or Point will be getting sent to Ottawa, and Callahan and/or Killorn would be getting sent to the Rangers. That could certainly hurt their depth but I don't know about crippling it. They'd essentially be in the same position as us where we can't afford to have $5mil+ guys in the middle of our line-up.
