I mean, you have to convert now, right?

I think the only thing that would ever make me cheer for another team is having a son play for them.

Agreed. And I got no sons.

Or if I bought another team, right?

That's pretty cold that you wouldn't cheer for any team that a daughter would play for.

There's some weird disconcerting stuff going around about Zaitsev, his ex?-wife and custody battle.  I guess that's why he left the Sens for personal reasons.  Doesn't sound good.

You can easily see why Tavares noped right out of that conversation.

Add to that Vlasic is 32, and carries $7m a year until he's 38.

I don't know that I would ever willingly sign a long-term, big money contract that takes a player to 37 or 38. Even Tavares getting signed to where he is was a bit of a question mark.

Sure, but he'll be LTIR'd by 35.

I know it's a little off track in the thread, but I'm sure the insurance companies aren't cool with that kind of thing.

Like, I wonder if Seabrook's contract is insured well?

In the short term it may not thrill them but the way I understand how insurance works in this context they'd probably just react by adjusting the premium on future deals.

Because Tavares' contract covers his age 28 to age 34 seasons, I think we are probably doing pretty well.  There's some decline by 34, on average, to be sure, and one can always get unlucky with injuries, but there also seem to be quite a number of pretty strong 34-year-olds (especially as opposed to 36-40 year olds).  I'd conservatively anticipate he's maybe only a strong 2nd-line center at age 33/34, and being paid too much for that.  But that's a tradeoff I'd accept for a guy who appears to be a top-10 center right now and is raising our ceiling quite a bit for the next several years.

Let's hope he ages like Bergeron, who seems to be doing pretty well at the moment at age 34 --- still over a point per game and actually had his 3 best scoring years from age 31-34 it looks like, though also fairly injury-prone.

For fun, I looked at last year's free agents and I didn't see anyone I'd rather have on the Leafs.  Nobody is even very close ... maybe Panarin would be workable, but I'd much rather have the center... maybe Eric Karlsson comes with a bigger potential upside but also a much bigger risk.

So, it seems like we did pretty much as well as possible on the free agent market with Tavares, and I think we needed that extra bit of talent to raise our ceiling, even if no unrestricted free agent is super-efficient in terms of production/$.
