Melnyk seemingly broke
Melnyk/Murray not re-signing Alfie
Giving up Silfverberg, Noesen and what will likely be a pretty good 1st round pick

Alfie leaving broke me.

Alfie walked over $1 million. Screw everything.  Where's Bane at? I just want to watch the world burn.

You think? Murray said in his press conference pretty emphatically that this wasn't financial.

Going second hand here,  didn't listen to presser.

Read that Murray was willing to go $4-$4.5 and that Alfie knew about the Ryan deal.

Think he still walks if we match Detroit?

Bobby Ryan is a great player and helps the team up front right away. Ottawa will be good for a number of years I think.

Murray also said the Melnyk told him to get him signed no matter what it took. It really did seem like Alfredsson simply wanted to move. Sounds like his conversations with Zetterberg convinced him.

Kinda. From what I hear a lot of it has to do with the idea that apparently Ottawa has plans to stick to a pretty strict internal cap whereas Detroit is apparently still looking to spend and bring in another defenseman. So it may be a financial issue but not a "what are they paying me" issue.

Silfverberg's probably going to score 20, maybe 25 next year.

Ryan is probably going to score 30, maybe 35 next year.

Add in that Ryan is older, about $4M more expensive, trading their 1st rounder last year in Noesen, trading their upcoming first rounder AND that Ryan is a UFA in 2 years and will get $7M+ easy (if he even stays in Ottawa) and that's a lot to pay for 5-10 extra goals.

Yeah that's a lot to give up for Ryan, I know he's a perennial 30+ goal man but if they can't keep him and any of those other 3 guys turns into a similar player....big mistake.

Nice of Alfredsson to admit he and the Sens signed a cap circumvention deal.

"When I did my last contract for four years ending in the (2012-13) season, I was asked to help the team manage the salary cap by adding on a extra year to my contract," he said in an opening statement. "I agreed. Each side fully expected I would retire and not play the 2012-13 season." - tsn.ca

That's got to be worth an investigation.
