Other draft day targets

He's got Carter Hart up to 24. Would you pick a goalie with the 30/31 pick?

Yeah I mean assuming Hunter & co. don't see any red flags with Hart or one of the other top-ranked goalies I'd be going D/G with 30/31 for sure.

I'd almost prefer D/D at 30/31 and snag a goalie at the end of round 2 / beginning of round 3.  Any goalie we'd chose in this draft is going to take too long to develop and be NHL ready when we are ready to start making serious noise (3-4 years).  Goalies really are a crap-shoot.  We need more Goalie prospects for sure, but I'd rather not spend a Top 50 pick on one.

Gotta say, its gonna be awesome to see the Leafs up at the podium SOOOOOO often!  8)

Too bad Pittsburgh is screwing us over with the pick they sent us as part of the Kessel trade!

Oh I know they have!  Too made our management didn't anticipate this run to the Stanley Cup for them and have an upgrade clause added to the 3rd round pick.

Hindsight being 100%, it would have been nice to see that 3rd rounder upgraded to a 1st round pick if they won the cup with Kessel as a contributor to their success!  Either that, or our 2016 2nd round pick was returned.  Oh well, what's done, is done.  Too bad we're also retaining salary on Kessel too!  >:(

Losing Kessel was always gonna cost the Leafs one way or another.  Oh well, I'm over it.  ;)

The Leafs negotiated with the leverage they had. The deal they made wasn't the result of them not being clever enough to ask for more favourable conditions.

It would have been nice if they had anticipated that Kessel would be better suited as a secondary support player that succeeds due to not being their premier player.  Oh well, what's done, is done!  Spilled milk already.

I'm sure they did anticipate that. Again, the fact that they weren't able to get a better deal isn't evidence that they didn't want one or try to get one. They had very little leverage. Asking for better conditions on the draft pick wasn't something Pittsburgh would just throw in. They negotiated this trade for a long time.

Well, we got what we got then!  No mulligans.

Adam Fox is a name that I hadn't really heard much of before but McKeens put him into their final top-30 rankings (at #27) so I looked into him a little bit. Seems pretty much like an American Girard. Scored at a near historic pace for a defenceman of his age in the USDP. Came in at 5-foot-10.75, 185 lbs at the combine so he's bigger than Girard (5-foot-9, 160.02 lbs). While he has the size advantage on Girard the scouting profiles do seem to question his defensive game a lot more.

Here's TLN's profiles on both, as well as Carter Hart's and Tyler Benson's (probably the only forward I would consider taking at 30/31):

You're missing that Arizona received the 53rd pick in the draft as compensation for not signing one of the prospects they acquired from Colorado at the deadline (Conner Bleackley). This is the full order: https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-draft-order/c-280973262

It would be really nice if they could convert the picks at 30 & 31 into a top 15 pick somehow? I'd go 2 or even 3 for 1 in order to get that 2nd 1st rounder a little higher somehow. We need to land another very good prospect at D.

It'd be nice to have a shot at drafting someone like Jake Bean, Charlie McAvoy or even Jakob Chychrun in that mid range of the first round.

That would be so awesome.

Aggressively marketing some of our veteran pieces might augment the pick package (or vice versa, it doesn't matter who headlines). I'd sort of love to do what Boston was able to do last year getting a run of picks in the heart of the first round, but with much better decision making and follow through.

Important to keep in mind it wasn't that long ago that #30 and #39 only moved the Leafs up to #22.

Boston was able to do what they did because of trading a piece like Lucic which the Leafs don't really have. JVR is the closest but even then...a team's got to want to make that deal.

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of JvR + the 30 and/or 31 might shake something loose and a team that just missed the playoffs, or needs a boost to the budget with some scoring.

Carolina's 13th? They have a second pick at 21 which they would be far more inclined to move as well. Islanders are in win-now. New Jersey needs the playoff money and the scoring.

Depends a bit on how that bottom 10 shake out.

JvR might be a hot commodity if he were to be put on the open market.
