Petr Mrazek signing with the Leafs [3 years, $3.8mil AAV]

Ugh... shoulda just kept Andersen. 😒
I like Andersen but I think it was time to move on. If Freddie is here, there is no tandem. He will play 55 plus games. It's time to see what Jack can do.

Are we really expecting Campbell to be anointed the starter and run as such for the season?  I can't imagine they are paying Mrazek that much for a backup role, or even 1B.

Mrazek will be the 1A but I expect Keefe to run with the hot goalie. Leafs couldn't afford to just get a backup goalie.

As much as Mrazek is being paid more money I still think Campbell might be the 1A just based on his performance last year but it's really going to be the difference between a guy playing 45-50 games vs. 32-37 games.  Whichever goaltender is hotter will get the 2 out of 3 games run, back to backs will be even splits and whoever is playing the best come the postseason will get Game 1 if we make the postseason.

Mrazek's $3.8mil was a teeny-tiny bit higher than what I would have pegged him at ($3.5mil) but I thought at the end of the day it would have been impossible to really judge that too harshly before seeing what the other UFA goalies got. Andersen of course got $4.5mil. Bernier just got a $4.125mil AAV from NJ for 2 years, so so far I think we're doing ok. Will be curious to see what Ullmark gets.

Not over the moon on this move, but I really think Mrazek is a better goalie than Campbell. Campbell was made to look real good on an excellent team that didn't give up much in the way of high danger chances against.

Also curious to see what Grubauer eventually signs for. He's the only guy out there that's clearly ahead of the rest of the pack of UFA goalies.

I think Dubas did very well to get Mrazek when he could. The goalie market has gone crazy. I would have liked Ullmark but not at 5 mill. Grubauer also but at 6 mill? Kuemper's price has gone sky high now.

When Kevin Woodley joined the podcast a few weeks ago, he pointed out that when a team acquires a goalie, it should make sure that the style of play aligns with the goaltender in order to create an environment for success. I think the Leafs can at least rest easy on this one having hired the former Hurricanes assistant coach to run their defense and penalty kill ? the two factors that would impact a goalie the most.
