We never really had an old one....so no change..
It's hard to come up with a reason to watch this team this season. Who really will be part of this team when their competitive. Reilly, Gardner, and Kadri. Not a very compelling reason to watch this year.

i think this season has always been a throwaway.  but at least unlike the last ten or so they were upfront about it.  I think the reason to watch is to see what babcock can do with nothing and watch the start of players like reilly who will hopefully be fantastic when this team gets good.
The core of this team going forward still doesn't exist, not a core that will win.

well of course it doesn't..this is year 1.5 of a rebuild.  this is still the tearing down.  have to demolish the house before you can build a new one.  this all goes back to babcock's "painful" comments when he came here.  hopefully the leafs will start to develop that new core with their first round pick this year.  not to say we might not already have a few pieces in reilly in nylander.

I always thought Phaneuf was going to be the chimney. Apparently he's a snowmobile.

What the hell are you talking about? [emoji57]

My point is there is not many reasons to watch because were not watching many players that will be a part of the future.

I believe it's a reference to the Hanafin vs Marner discussion prior to the draft last year.

don't really think i disagreed on that point.  but it all depends on what part of the future you need to see.  which is why i pointed out babcock.  and also it seems like kind of a strange thing to say now ..as if something has changed post this trade.  but phaneuf wasn't part of our magic core of the future either.  so i guess by that standard you really had no reason to watch from day one but you're bringing it up now.  which doesn't make the point invalid.  it just seems like a strange time to mention it.

I'm not criticising you personally, I wanna preface my comment here with that.

But, I've never understood this line of thinking. Perhaps it's because I grew up in Europe as a soccer guy, but I support the Toronto Maple Leafs and I'm going to watch their games no matter who is playing for them. It's an arbitrary distinction, but I think that's the difference between a fan and a supporter.

Sure it'd be nice if there was more of a core there now to cheer nightly, but I know that there is a plan in place. I know that there are smart people in charge who in short order have done a lot of things many people thought next to impossible. They have a coach who is doing quite a lot of things that few thought possible with this group of players. He's also working towards turning the few core guys they do have on the roster currently into more complete impact NHL'ers. There are quite a few pieces coming down the pipeline that project as significant contributors over the next few years, that's is quite a lot to be excited about.

They were a better team before this trade which makes them even less watchable. At least they were in a lot of games this year. I suspect them to be in less now. I still watch but it's just going to be that much more ugly and I usually shrug my shoulders at the end of game whether they won or lost. It is for the greater good and I am part of tank nation but it's still hard to watch.

Explaining jokes to render them devoid of humour is my thing. Sorry.

I get where you are coming from...but maybe some young guys will get a few games in to give us a future teaser..and i definitely am excited that they are following the plan..i thought Clarkson and Phaneuf were untradeable !!

Huh. No retention, expiring contracts coming back, a prospect, a pick, an extra contract space... win for the Leafs, a 'now' trade for Ottawa. I'm a little shocked.

Michalek waived to go to Toronto, interesting, could be worth something if healthy next year. Cowan's potential cap savings in a buyout is weird, only works for this season though I think.

After Polak is traded...

Rielly-Hunwick
Gardiner-Marincin
Cowan-Corrado
Harrington

That is a flaming tank of a dcorp.

I really can't believe they moved him with no retention, amazing.

But wasn't this something that was generally going to happen all along, ship out our players worth something to get futures? They were in some games and got blown out of others. You could've even said the exact same statement when they traded Kessel.

I've had my phone off all morning. I just got here. I'm going to need a minute to process this.

Although my initial reaction is how weird it is that this trade is with ottawa. I'm sure it's been mentioned on twitter or somewhere but what was the last Ottawa/Toronto trade.

Close.  Damian.

This is the latest one I could find (according to nhltradetracker.com):

March 17, 1998:

Toronto Maple Leafs acquire
1998 8th round pick (#215-Dwight Wolfe)

Ottawa Senators acquire
Per Gustafsson
