Why is it dumb?... Isn't he a Toronto native who hates the Leafs? That's good enough for me, although, I personally wouldn't boo him.

In a word, no. Very much no.

In a few more words:

Those are not the words of someone who hates the Leafs.

There is literally zero reason to boo him that can't basically be boiled down to one of two things - he was good for a team he doesn't play for anymore, or racism.
Not all fans that go to the games are as informed as our group here at TMLFANS.  ;)

Remember when Leafs fans booed Saku Koivu and Alex Kovalev when they left the Habs?

Me neither.

If I remember correctly, Suban starting getting booed in TO after cheap shoting Lupul in a fight a few years back.

That Willy play was certainly something.

Big game for the Chewie brothers.

Who are the Chewie brothers and where did that come from?

Marner does it a bit, but not nearly as much as JvR (and Nylander).

Did those two even get booed by Leafs fans when they were on the Habs?  I don't remember.

I think with Subban when he was with Montreal he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way for reasons other than his personality - on ice stuff that fans of more than one team got on him for.  I always figured that's why he was booed - he was a great player on a rival who also did some things on the ice that would rile up an opposing crowd.

JVR has been pretty sluggish so far this year but let's not forget that he's got some skill.

I've always felt JVR has always struggled to live up to the idea of the player that people want him to be, which is sort of an evolutionary Dave Andreychuk or Gary Roberts, and not so much focused on the fact that he's a more skill/speed type.

I just wanted to loop back onto this comment, considering what Babcock said post-game:

Coming into your first season here last year, what did you know about James van Riemsdyk and what have you learned in the time you?ve coached him?

Babcock: Big, talented guy, obviously. Played at the Olympics and had been a good player. James? game is still, in my opinion, young. He can be a way better player than he is because he can add a cycle game, a heavier game. He?s always been a rush player but he can be more than that because of his hands and his skill set. We work with him every day trying to evolve that part of his game. What I like about James the most is that James wants to be great. He lives that way. He thinks about hockey all the time. He wants to be a hockey player first. I think it doesn't matter how old you are; if you think like that, you can get better.

Outside of Alfredsson I don't remember any opposing players getting the "boo every time they touch the puck" treatment.

I can't off hand think of a thing he did in Montreal that would rile people up that was distinct from his "personality".

Yeah and without doubting Babcock's coaching abilities all I'll say in that regard is that I think people have been trying to teach that to JVR since he came into the league. At some point you have to realistically question if he's really got that.

I think he can still learn that type of game, but I'm not sure it will be with us. As much as JvR says he wants to be great, I think he is still seeing enough success the way he is currently operating to be interested in changing (rush player). When he starts to slow down, maybe he'll make that transition to an Andreychuk game. Or if he plays with a set-up centre, rather than a rush centre.

I think JvR has always shown flashes of being able to do what we want, play heavier and become more adept at cycling etc.  His problem has been consistency in doing it, and he hasn't been helped by a number of years under Carlyle.

Some players mature at different points in their career, so its not at all impossible that he won't find that consistency.  See Nazem Kadri for a similar example, who seems to be coming into form consistently this year after years of showing flashes of being what he's capable of.  Naz is only one year younger than JvR.

I've noticed Marner doing it almost as much as JvR.

A mass email campaign to TML is in order.

Vigorous booing from the hometown crowd is certainly justified.

Even better: MLSE should give everyone in the crowd a TML mouthguard. Instead of clapping, they could all just chew on one half of the mouthguard.
