Preseason: Wings @ Leafs - Oct. 3rd, 7:00pm - SN1, TSN 1050

Nice finish by Mantha. If only we could have somehow ended up with him instead of Gauthier at 2013 draft. He is miles away a far more promising prospect with 1st or 2nd line skills.
If Gauthier ever establishes himself as an NHLer it would be as a 4th line centre.

Mantha had a pretty poor first year as a pro, heck of a shot, let's see what he and Freddy do this year.

Different kinds of prospects.

In addition to the Bernier/Reimer stuff...

Steve Burtch on Twitter talked about how the Leafs shot against volume likely will come down due to new possession focus, but they'll likely still face quite a few significant scoring chances against.

A stat that measures goalies performance against those types of chances is HD SV%.

Since 07 Reimer is 7th in the NHL against those types of opportunities.

Bernier isn't in the top ten.

Perhaps Reimer is better suited to play behind this kind of team now?

If Rielly didn't tip that I'm rather sad about Bernier.  Mrazek, OTOH, looks solid.

Yeah, at the risk of beating a dead horse, Reimer has been significantly better in the pre-season.

I'm not giving up on Bernier yet but he's not giving us much of a reason to think he's the answer.

It really seems irrelevant to me because neither of them appear to be Cup calibre goaltenders...at least in the sense of a guy who can carry a decent team and make them dangerous ala a Carey Price.  Maybe they could perform as a Corey Crawford/Jonathan Quick kind of goaltender but I'm not convinced that either are capable of shutting down a team in a high pressure situation.

Reimer gets rattled too easily and Bernier is pretty much guaranteed to give up one questionable goal every start.

I'd describe the Holland/Mantha fight as "languorous."

Mantha suckered him a little there, said he didn't wanna fight, Holland eased off and then Mantha threw a couple of punches.

I think that's why Holland was so sour when they separated.

I can't believe that we lost to a mostly-AHL team.

Sorry, I meant that I totally believe that we lost to a mostly-AHL team.

I wonder if some team will try 3 defensemen in OT if they figure they have a better shot in the SO.

I wonder how often, if at all, Babcock uses Phaneuf 3-on-3. This set-up does not seem to benefit him at all.

I was just thinking the same thing, literally.  C or no C, he shouldn't be out there if it doesn't suit his game.

It looked like Gardiner played most of that 3 on 3 overtime.  Phaneuf is just way too stiff at this point to play 3on3 successfully.  I really wish he'd take one of his hands off his stick to give himself a little more reach.

If you've got a Gardiner and a Rielly, there's really no question about what the strategy should be.

Well we held the Wings farm team to 15 shots and came within a Bernier softy of tying it.

Mrazek was great too.

I thought Boyes looked good.

One thing I've noticed that I don't like from Lupul this preseason, he stops skating and puts a two handed slash on his opponents stick. I think he's going to take a lot of slashing penalties this year. It's a lazy play.

I think it basically went Gardiner-Rielly-Gardiner-Hunwick tonight. I'd use that type of rotation in the regular season as well.

I wouldn't mind losing like that on the regular this year.

JvR - Kadri - Boyes/whoever is probably line 1 now.

That's fine too except maybe I'd give Rielly the two shifts.
