R1: Tampa Bay Lightning (A2) vs. Florida Panthers (A3)

I think NHL has to have extra consideration for dirty hits against star players. And give harsher suspensions for them.

Artem Zub's elbow to Tavares face without the puck in vicinity, Hagel on Barkov, Ekblad on Hagel, etc... a league has to protect its stars like the NBA does....otherwise it means the top players can't play freely, and their careers end earlier.

Looking at these hits....getting zero games or 1 game suspensions......how the F did Bunting get 3 games for his hit on Cernak?

I mean aside from bc he was a Leaf.

If Tampa wins the series and the Leafs somehow fail to advance....this Tampa team is going to be injured to hell after this round.

Ekblad could have just lit up Hagel with a clean check. He chose to target the head. How is that not a 5 game suspension?

If the NHL isn't going to punish/suspend players for these types of hits they are just going to continue.

It's currently open season on John Tavares' head because the league refuses to do anything.

I’m okay with Mikkola only getting a fine. The in-game punishment for that felt sufficient.

Ekblad should be getting an in-person hearing, though. I initially expected he’d only get a couple games, but the more I watch it, the worse it looks. He doesn’t even try to throw a hit. He just gives Hagel a forearm/elbow to the head.

Mikkola i'm ok with. It was a player in a vulnerable spot. He's trying to play hard, finish his check. I don't think he purposefully targets the head.

I'm not going to say that they were identical plays but Kadri getting 3 games for hitting Wingels in a similar vulnerable spot. Wingels tripped as Kadri committed to throwing a big hit and Kadri didn't stop when Wingels went down Mikkola say Girgensons vulnerable and went back to throw that hit. To me that's still intentional because even a "clean" (not elevating or using the elbow) drives right into his head. I a disagree that it a fine so the right punishment for that hit

Whatever former goon/clown running the shitshow that is player safety is for some reason afraid of the optics of a small suspension against the Leafs. It's totally ridiculous, and there is enough evidence to form this conclusion.

I try not to look at incidents from more than a season or so ago when evaluating, as standards shift so much. By current standards, Mikkola only getting a fine is the right punishment.
