It's not one or the other. I can enjoy watching and rooting for the Leafs while at the same time pointing out that other GMs have convinced similar talent players to take less money.  Given the cap and the reality of the situation, it's not unreasonable to suggest the Leafs will have to jump through hoops to keep under the cap this season especially when Hyman and Dermott are back. It puts the team at a disadvantage with respect to other teams.

I'd be more inclined to listen to you in that sense if you didn't pull basically the exact same "woe is us" chicken little routine in the Matthews thread about a deal where even you yourself admitted that your only issue with it is it might put the Leafs in a moderately worse cap situation 6 seasons from when it was signed.

But that said, the question wasn't about why someone might not like the deal. It was why anyone would be mad at Marner for negotiating the best deal for himself.

It just makes things more difficult on the Leafs this season. Had Marner come in at 9.25 for instance, the Leafs would be able to accrue cap space as the season goes on instead of having to rely on LTIR and having to use less than 23 men on the roster to make the cap shenanigans work.

Sure 1.5M more doesn't sound like alot, but overpay 2-3 guys that much relative to what other GMs are doing and you've effectively boxed yourself in a corner.  Let's hope Leafs win the Cup in the next 2-4 years so we can look back and laugh at all this.

No, they would still be in LTIR and wouldn't be able to acrue cap space as the year went on.  However, they wouldn't have to run 20/21-man rosters once Hyman returns.  So you are half-correct.

Again I ask, why can anyone be so upset at someone for negotiating a better deal for themselves? If I negotiate a worse salary for myself than my coworker, that's on me, not my coworker.

Well, like I said elsewhere. It's in large part because so many fans seem incapable of enjoying the game apart from taking on the role of pretend-GM.

Plus there's just the simple truth that they've managed to get people to be rooting for the success of a massive business enterprise. Now, they have a vested interest in getting people to think it's not a business. It's why they do all of the "The Leafs Tradition of Excellence" and "The Maple Leafs are about Glory and Honor and Pride and..." and all of the nonsense in their brought to you by Mastercard Youtube videos. But the more and more they can keep people believing in all that(and castigating players for pursuing their own financial interests) vs. having a traditional business/client relationship the easier it is to keep the suckers fleeced.

But but but these are "YOUR" Toronto Maple Leafs!

If they are mine, why are you charging me $200 a ticket and $20 for a beer?  Hmmmm....
