Well, like I said elsewhere. It's in large part because so many fans seem incapable of enjoying the game apart from taking on the role of pretend-GM.
Plus there's just the simple truth that they've managed to get people to be rooting for the success of a massive business enterprise. Now, they have a vested interest in getting people to think it's not a business. It's why they do all of the "The Leafs Tradition of Excellence" and "The Maple Leafs are about Glory and Honor and Pride and..." and all of the nonsense in their brought to you by Mastercard Youtube videos. But the more and more they can keep people believing in all that(and castigating players for pursuing their own financial interests) vs. having a traditional business/client relationship the easier it is to keep the suckers fleeced.
