Richard Panik traded to Chicago for Jeremy Morin

Patrick said:
Haven't the Hawks been looking for a winger for Toews?

It'd be pretty crazy if Panik found a home there.

He and Hossa are typically stapled together but yeah especially this season with the Saad trade that left-winger slot has been a rotating door of meh players. Teravainen has gotten the most action there and he's a good young player, but it looks like Shaw, Garbutt, Tikhonov, Dano, Bickell, and Desjardins have all gotten at least a couple of games alongside Toews.

Dubas talks about this trade and pumps the tires of Sheldon Keefe quite a bit.

I think he might be an NHL coach next year.

Just in time for the Leafs to not get any compensation.

Well that's how Leaf fortunes have always turned out... ;)

I hope Sheldon has at least a 3 year contract that he has agreed to honour, I would think part of the plan is to have him develop the last rash and this years cadre of prospects for Babs to work with. Or he moves up to the big bench with Babs after the 3 years.

I doubt anyone would sign a "stay in the AHL exclusively even if you get NHL opportunities" clause.  The only coaches who turn down NHL opportunities are guys like Jeff Blashill who essentially were promised the head coaching job in Detroit when Babcock left.

Yeah. At most, he'd have a clause that wouldn't allow him out of his contract until after the 2nd season, but, even then, if there was an opportunity for him, I doubt the Leafs would stand in his way.

in which Kyle the Reporter misses an opportunity for a punnier article title.

The Maple Leafs wouldn?t have traded for forward Jeremy Morin if they believed he was just another minor-league hockey player, says assistant general manager Kyle Dubas.

[...]

?We think he?ll be a key guy down the stretch and then hopefully open up some eyes up top and move him on to where his potential dictates,? said Dubas.

?We?re confident that his potential dictates that (the NHL) is where he should be, so it?s up to us to get him up there now.?

[...]

One of the differences between the two is that Morin is a shooter while Panik is a playmaker. Morin, six-foot-one 196 pounds, has produced 3.13 shots on net per game in 236 AHL games. Panik, six-foot-one 208 pounds, has averaged 1.98 shots in 156 AHL games.

?He?s produced well at the AHL level, always has, generates a lot of shots, which is important to us,? said Dubas.

?Definitely I try to be a shooter first,? said Morin. ?That?s how I build my game, pucks on net, going to the net hard, creating opportunities any time I?m on the ice.?

With point production being similar, Dubas says it wasn?t his belief in analytics or the underlying numbers that made him make the trade.

?More subjective things than anything quantitative at this point,? said Dubas. ?The numbers analytically are very similar, just some subjective old-time hockey and scouting.?

Is Dubas implying he uses the 'eye test'? It's a sad day in Analyticsville.  :-[

I know  :( I mean, he's always said that he does from the moment he was hired but seeing it in this article really drives it home.

Keep in mind that when Dubas says he's using the eye test, what he really means is he's subjecting prospects to a complicated biometric evaluation in which pupil dilation frequency and blink patterns are recorded for future analysis and implementation.

Yeah, PDF and BP technology has come so far that they're almost able to determine future compete levels.  Almost.

I always thought he said it with a wink, to keep Don Cherry happy.
