Actual roster move or cap move?

Hey oh

We now have $380,350 of LTIR salary room

This should be a roster move, as the cap 'space' is inconsequential at this time.

Sandin was fine against weaker competition, but clearly needed more seasoning after the adrenaline of the first couple of games wore off. He can be called up for 3 more games to keep the ELC slide. That being said, he wasn't the worst D-man of the group so far in cushy deployment. The Marlies are going to wreck the AHL.

And now Marincin - Holl, as it was always meant to be.

I was going to say from what I've seen thus far I dont think Kevin Gravel will be an upgrade so what's the point.

No, and to me given that he wasn't the worst I don't think he's hurt but playing 13 minutes a night to develop his skills.  I don't think he needs to play 25 minutes against weaker competition in the AHL to develop those same skills.    Kevin Gravel on the other hand should not be in the NHL.

I'm not really trying to compare 6th defenseman Sandin to 7th defenseman Gravel.  I'm just not sure that I want to see Gravel on the roster.  I know he wont' see much ice time if at all, but I'm not looking forward to the idea of him even being in the possible scenario where he plays.

Kevin Gravel, btw, played top shutdown minutes in his handful of games with the Marlies, with heavy PK and end of game close outs (alongside Liljegren). On paper, he is a Martin Marincin clone. 6'4" 200+ lb  former Oiler LD playing defensive minutes.

Yeah, I saw a little too much Oilers hockey over the last two years.  I'm not impressed with his game.

Sandin was sent down and Gravel has been called up.

Too bad, I wanted to see them together on the Leafs blueline.

We could use a Sandin Gravel defence.

Can you tell if it was his decision making, lack of skill, or the Oiler's 'system'?

Don't want to say that I called it but I called it.

Considering a few things from the past day, I'm starting to suspect that Sandin is here mostly to get his feet wet and that he'll be back on the Marlies once Dermott returns.

1) Marincin, love him or hate him, played the most PK minutes on the team last night. Even if he won't lead the team in that category every single night, it still indicates that Babcock will consider him a big part of that group post-Hainsey/Zaitsev. Tough to potentially lose a guy like that on waivers.

2) Sandin is not playing on any specialty team units, and likely won't at any point of the season. Like we saw last night, that means he won't be playing a ton of minutes considering the top-4 is poised to be leaned on heavily at 5-on-5.

3) Players like Petan and Shore seem to still be very much in contention for a spot on the team even though their cap hits make it much more difficult to keep Sandin on the team once healthy.

Sandin deserves to be on the roster more than Ceci.  This is a consequence of a Dubas decision that hurts the team.

Great move, 12 minutes a night with no special teams. They're doing what's best for his development. Sandman's going to be a stud.

I didn't want to because it does feel like I was off on my first point. But I do think the fact that both Marincin and Holl being used on the PK right now are big reasons Sandin is going back down.

On point #3, this means that the Leafs can decide their 4th line based off merit and not because of what simply fits under the cap. With Sandin, it was pretty much guaranteed that Petan and Shore were goners because of their $750k+ AAVs. Now the play on the ice will decide which two of the following the Leafs can keep: Petan, Shore, Timashov, Spezza. Gotta think Spezza might be sweating a little bit right now.

He only played for them last season, and only suited up for 36 games. But in those limited games/minutes his metrics (shot attempts against, goals against, expected goals against) were better than most of the other Oilers defencemen. But regardless the Leafs likely have 4 games left before Dermott returns and we already know that Marincin-Holl will be suiting up together for one of those games tomorrow. I doubt we actually see Gravel in the line-up.

Plus, I mean at least it wasn't Harpur right?

I read an article about Gravel, being afflicted with some bowel disease and that he has corrected it with medication and diet.  That he was heading in the right direction before he got ill.  I actually thought he played pretty steady in the limited pre season action he had been seeing.
Lets give the guy a chance and hope Sandin gets huge minutes on the farm.

Deserves isn't necessarily relevant right now.
With the level of skill that Sandin possesses, he needs to continue to grow as a player. He will not to that playing sheltered minutes in the NHL. He needs puck time. He needs that extra split second to make the correct decisions on the important plays. The talent may not be at the same level as the NHL but I would argue that a confident Sandin in the AHL playing 25 minutes a night, a good chunk of it controlling the play, is exactly what you want for him.

I'll give you that one.  I'm ok with Holl-Marincin for now until Dermott comes back and at least I don't expect Babcock to shove Gravel into the lineup.  I'm not sure I could say the same with Harpur.
