Not sure why the herd mentality disses on Marincin.  He's a perfectly serviceable third-pairing guy.  There's a reason they re-signed him.

Not sure I agree. He's a perfectly serviceable #7/AHL depth guy. No more.

Not challenging you to do this, but I'd like to see the stats that back up people's low opinion of him.  I've been around here long enough to know that certain D-men get tagged as whipping boys.  Sometimes it's warranted, sometimes not.

He's 9th on this team or even further down the depth chart.

Agreed.  They have shored up the D considerably.  But that's different than saying he's incapable of playing on the 3rd pairing.  I think he is.

I think this boils down to a difference in perception of what a 3rd pairing guy should ideally be. If all you're asking out of the position is playing 12-14 minutes a night I think the difference between Marincin and someone like Bogosian is fairly small.

I think, though, when you're looking at 3rd pairing guys you also really do have to take into account their ability to step it up when you need them to and really play like a solid #4 type occasionally if someone's hurt mid-game. That's what separates Marincin from good 3rd pairing guys in my eyes. If Bogosian has to get 19 or 20 minutes one night I'm a lot more comfortable with it than Marincin in the same situation.

I owe everyone an apology for re-starting the Marincin debate but I'll just say that he is not someone who should get regular minutes on a 3rd pairing but he is a perfectly fine depth defenceman, especially when the role you're trying to fill is a PK presence. I'm going to guess most teams don't have a 8/9 guy who they trust to play 2+ minutes on the PK like the Leafs do with Marv.

Is there any confirmation of this terrible decision?

Chris' tweet there just seems to be speculation.

My source confirmed that he is indeed playing and it's because I suggested he should since it's his birthday.

-47 giveaways in 50 games over the last two seasons (not the best stat, I acknowledge, but that's still indicative of a problem considering he averages 3rd pairing minutes - for comparison, Bogosian had 57 in 92 games in the same time period)
-On Leaf D who played at least 50 games in that same time span w. worse scoring chances for percentages are Hainsey, Zaitsev, Ceci, and, by a hair, Holl (who, as we know, is drastically improved so far this season)
-Not entirely his fault, obviously, but he also has the worst on-ice Sv% of any Leaf who played at least 50 games
-While only Hainey and Zaitsev have higher 5-on-5 blocked shots/60 rates, we know that blocked shots are a function of the other team having the puck
-Worst 5-on-5 giveaways per/60 rates among Leaf defencemen who dressed for at least 1 game in that span

Hyman took a shot off the foot in the 2nd period I believe. Let's hope it isn't broken. Bogo needs a rest.

Hutchinson should play.  If the Leafs can't beat the Sens with Hutch in net he's not an NHL goalie.

That all depends. If Hutchinson was in net last night, the Leafs lose. If most backups were in net last night, the Leafs lose.

I think moving Nylander back to the right to give Tavares some give and go options will be great. Kerfoot adding an additional fast break and facilitation option to the line can only help.
