Sharks @ Leafs - Dec. 3rd, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

While I wouldn't go as far as to say it's over, it does certainly appear to be circling the drain right now. If they can't right the ship in the next couple weeks, they'll be facing a serious dogfight to try to make the playoffs - and they have a lot of tough matchups in the next couple weeks. I don't like their chances right now, but it's not quite over yet.

They were playing with a bit of dearth in the talent department against a good team tonight, might not be so much doom.

Their upcoming schedule is no joke. Dallas, Ottawa, and then 5 of the top teams in the league in a row: Boston, LA, St. Louis, Chicago, and Pittsburgh.

I do expect the team's fortunes to reverse, but it might be a few weeks, or even months, until that happens.

With Gardiner on the ice the shot attempts were 20-17 for Toronto. With Gardiner on the bench they were 54-15 for San Jose. Wow.

That's actually impressive. It's funny enough because he's the guy they're apparently looking to trade.

I would want to look at other players so comparables. You cant do much with this stat in a vacuum.

Not saying to do much with it other than as an insight into Gardiner's performance last night.

You can look at the entire team here: http://www.extraskater.com/game/2013-12-03-sharks-maple-leafs#shot-attempt-chart

Gardiner played relatively well last night, no doubt and the 23 mins he played means Carlyle recognized it. If he could do it consistently there would be no concerns about his play.

If he could do it every night he would be untouchable.

I actually think the most interesting stat there is Holland's corsi rating. 19 shots directed at the Sharks net while he was on the ice is second to only Gardiner on the team, and well ahead of any other Leafs player. And from watching I could tell you most of that was probably when he was on the top line.

In fact, the Leafs only had 3 shots directed at the net while Bozak was on the ice, while that number jumps to 12/11 for Kessel/JVR. That's a pretty big discrepancy.

Holland also started 60% in the offensive zone so he was pretty protected last night.  Plus lower minutes. That's why I didn't mention his, or even Kulemin's.

Gardiner's is definitely the most impressive, I was just surprised at the difference between Bozak and Kessel/JVR's numbers, which was partially due to Holland's play (also partially due to score effects too).

I watched the game, and even though they lost I enjoyed it. But if I was all about the numbers like some of you, I don't think I would have. It is a friggen game, and all I hear is numbers. Some of you are WAY over dissecting the game and players, and I thought it was just the media doing that.

Or maybe we're just using numbers to back-up our own observations of the game (because you know we all watched it too).

I said in the GDT that the top line had its best shifts when Holland was playing with them. And many people noted that Gardiner was one of the best Leafs on the ice.

What does this even mean?  I enjoyed watching the game, like I enjoy watching every game.  I didn't even look at any numbers until I came across them on Twitter, and somehow this means it's "all about the numbers" and I don't enjoy the games as much as you do?

I'd argue I enjoy them more than you do, but I don't care to do so because it's irrelevant.

Brad Stuart: "They're tired and it's their fourth line. No disrespect, but maybe you could try things you wouldn't ordinarily do."

I never saw the game unfortunately. From what I read on NHL.com, TO faired fairly well

Category SJS TOR
Power Plays 1/4 2/3
Hits 19 56
Faceoff Wins 32 35
Giveaways 7 17
Takeaways 9 3
Blocked Shots 9 19
Penalty Minutes 11 13

The majority of the stats show we played with SJ most of the night. Hopefully we can keep that up for the next game, with better results

I wouldn't say that is entirely accurate, as SJ dominated the 1st and didn't let TO do anything in the 3rd. Leafs played a really good 2nd; however, and, considering the injuries, they didn't fare too badly overall. Might have stolen a point too had there been a 4th line that didn't consist of two of the worst/useless "hockey" players in the league.
