So the debate begins: Matthews vs. Laine

BUT, OFFENSIVE UPSIDE!

Also no. Not only does it appear that Matthews is already a better scorer, offense isn't all that matters. Countless scouts have raved about Matthews' hockey IQ and defensive efforts.

That entire article seems to be based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what scouts mean when they use the word upside.

Finland doesn't care if Laine goes first overall, Puljujarvi-Barkov-Laine is going to be a force for them internationally for the next 10+ years.

+ Kapanen and Rantanen and Teravainen
and on the back end: Maatta, Vatanen, Ristolainen and maybe Juolevi

I like the way they've developed their players.

Yeah but it was against Belarus so can we really even count it?

He had 2 goals and an assist against them. Using NHLe that translates to roughly 0.8 goals and 0.4 assists against an actual country. Not bad.

Where on the ice did his shots come from.  And was the goalie CHL calibre or GTHL calibre?

Tell that to Mats and Tommy Salo back in Salt Lake.  :( :o

Corey Pronman was on TSN1050 yesterday, saying he considered it a toss-up between Matthews and Laine.

Well, maybe there is something to it.  I just keep thinking that they're trying to drum up interest/clicks from Leaf nation.

I'm pretty sure the Jets would love it if the Leafs were somehow convinced to pick Laine.

He goes to Norway to polish his Rolls, read about in it the Nordic car cleaning Journal. He gets Salming to do the vacuuming ;)

I sometimes wonder if there's some self interest going on, also. These professional scouting types are more likely to get media calls and radio/tv spots if there's some controversy; you almost get a sense of the weather channel hyping up talk of a KillStorm that ends up being 5 centimeters of snow.

A fun showcase of the slightly different wristers Matthews can unleash.

#1: Quick release (off leg)

See the light kick glide to give himself a slightly better short-side angle?

#2: Heavy wrister
