The 2014 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

What does everyone think of Francisco?  Can he take over for Lind, so that we may deal Lind in a package for a decent starter (end of the rotation type of guy?)

Looking at their respective careers, Francisco would be a downgrade on Lind. He's been decent while filling in for him, but, it's unlikely he'll be able to keep it up. He's more of a platoon guy than an every day guy. As for what kind of return the Jays could get for Lind . . . I wouldn't expect to get anyone worthwhile in terms of MLB ready guys. They might be able to snag a quality prospect or two for him, but, at best, he brings back a back of the rotation type - and he's more valuable to the team than that. If the team decides to blow things up, trading Lind and using Fransisco is obviously something they have to consider, but, with the AL East being so close right now, the smarter move is probably holding on to Lind and hoping a couple of the starters find their way.

Francisco is more of a platoon/bench player. He can hit RHP with power but he strikes out an absolute ton and doesn't get on base a whole lot. He can't touch LHP. Jays would be much better off with his bat on the bench than full time in the lineup but hey, that's just coming from a guy who doesn't see the value of having below average minor league players on a major league bench.

Never thought the bullpen would be blowing this many leads.  :(

There's always something with this team.

It doesn't help when Sergio Santos is putting two men on base every time he gets brought out of the bullpen.

And now Cabrera, coming into the game leading the league in hits, is hit in the knee by a pitch and helped off the field.  Of. Course.  This team is cursed, and double cursed in Kansas City.

I was wondering what happened. This sucks. It doesn't seem that anything can go right for the Jays these days. :(

Another day, another loss. Hutchison gives up the key 2-run double in the 7th after another strong start. I got a little worried when the Jays had two on and none out in the top half and couldn't come through. Now I know.

I read that Melky is just day to day though and that x-rays were negative.

But you know, every team gets minor injuries like this, and then some. The major problem is that the Jays bench is literally the worst I have ever seen. Sierra and Diaz are bad minor league players, as was Goins. When you have a garbage bench and zero depth that makes any injury seem monumental.

The only thing the Jays are cursed with is a bad GM and horrible management.

Oh, you took that mighty seriously.  To clarify, I do not believe in curses, or witchcraft, or voodoo magic.

Dammit, then I guess I have to throw out this AA doll I constructed using the human hair pulled out from watching his awful teams!!

And seriously about Witchcraft? I thought American Horror Story: Coven was a documentary  :'(

Curses, witchcraft, magic and voodoo are real. Just watch Game of Thrones. Winter is coming.

Instead we just have an ownership that talks out of both ends.  Come to the games and we will spend money.....just up to our internal cap that we try not to acknowledge.  The Jays have absolutely no depth on offense or in the pitching rotation.

Anthony Gose - Disappointed in preseason and is hitting .235 with a .659 OPS in the minors
Steve Tolleson is a career minor leaguer and is hitting .236 with a .679 OPS in the minors

Gose at least provides a little more versatility for the bench...can play all three outfield positions if you need him to, and he has speed (although he appears to be a dumb player on the basepaths because he gets thrown out a lot).

Marcus Stroman: "...he has the stuff, delivery and command to be a starter who pitches at the front of Toronto?s rotation. His ability to spot his fastball and knack for missing barrels should help him have a smooth transition while racking up plenty of strikeouts."

Dalton Pompey, CF, Blue Jays (High-A Dunedin):

"During the offseason, Pompey?s name was in the running for the Jays top 10 list, and after falling short of that distinction he was in the running (but not chosen) to be named a prospect on the rise in that organization. The omission is our mistake?and a foolish one at that?as the 21-year-old outfielder has blossomed into arguably the top position prospect in the Blue Jays organization, a toolsy dream of a player who is finally healthy and putting the pieces together on the field. A relatively unknown 16th-round draft pick in 2010, Pompey has struggled with injuries, most notably a broken hamate bone, but he has always flashed the promise, especially the plus-plus speed (and plus-plus baserunning) and defensive chops in center field. A switch-hitter at present, Pompey is superior from the left side of the plate, with a quick to-the-ball stroke and gap pop. While he?s far from a finished product?the right-side bat can look like a mess, with poor balance and bat control, and the defense in center is still more raw athleticism than crisp reads and routes?the step forward in 2014 is legitimate, and if Pompey can stay healthy, he should reach the Double-A level at some point during the season and emerge as a nationally recognized prospect." ?Jason Parks

Just to add to this misery party, Colby Rasmus looks absolutely hopeless right now.  He is striking out like a fiend and swinging wildly.  I'm not saying he won't get his stroke back, but boy right now he looks lost.

Well to be fair to Colby, that's kind of his m.o. He has terrible pitch selection, strikes out a lot and barely walks.
But yea, he is looking particularly bad this year so far. Contract season too. I don't think you can shell out too much dough and/or term for the guy considering that outside of an abbreviated season last year and a great season in STL 4 years ago, his numbers are pretty awful.

He started terribly last season too, from what I recall. He started hitting later in the season, but always seemed to be a threat to strike out three times a game.
