The 2014 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

I actually wondered about using that phrasing, but I swear I've seen it used like that before and thought it gets the 'regression to the mean' sort of thing across better.  But yes!

It's definitely a phrase sports bloggers like to use, but, I'm not sure it's a phrase anyone who actually publishes real statistical analyses would use. It just feels like an oxymoron.

I just find it easier/clearer.  "Regression to the mean," while really meaning something extreme coming back towards the norm/average, I think conjures up the idea of something negative occurring because of the word 'regression.'  Doesn't really matter what you call it in the end.

On a side note, I think Seitzer is our new lord and savior.

It's crazy how different they look thanks to him, but, he really hasn't done anything revolutionary. He just has them approaching at bats the same way teams like the Yankees and Red Sox do - take a lot of pitches, don't try to do too much, etc. He's just managed to really get everyone to buy in.

And according to Jonah Keri's latest MLB 30 rankings, the Jays offense has actually had BAD luck so far - so some positive regression could be expected (however the pitching has had very good luck so some negative regression may be in the cards...).

The 'law of averages'?

Whatever goes up, will eventually come down and vice versa.

Don't expect to keep onto a winning streak forever, but I do expect them to keep doing well enough to stay atop their division.  Yes, they can!

For such a low scoring game (relative to the previous night), that was a lot of fun to watch.  Good defense, then that beautiful bunt that Gose has to give the team the walk-off win. Very nice.

**edit - incomplete sentence, made zero sense...  :P

What a beauty that was.

I was at the game, and I gotta tell you, thank goodness for some pretty great defense in that game.

Hendriks was getting hit a fair bit, so I really didn't think they were going to win this one.

Not in terms of his actual pitches, but he reminds me of Josh Towers/Jesse Litsch.  A guy who had some success but never really looked like he was in control of the game when he was on the mound.  Still, if they can get a handful of decent starts out of him before he gets lit up a few times, that might give enough time to give Stroman or Sanchez a call up.

I'm a little nervous about Dickey. He was spotted to two run leads twice, and now trails 5-4 in the 5th after 105 pitches. Little worried about the streak.

Enh. A loss just gives them an opportunity to start a new win streak.

I think at some point Dickey's ordinariness is just going to be a fact of life. Knuckleball or not, 38 years old or not, it was never all that realistic to expect him to continue to throw up ace-like numbers.

16 HR in May and I don't think he hit his first of the month until the 6th or something. Incredible.

He only had 2 in his first 31 games, and it looked like he was going to have a seriously disappointing season. Ancient history now.

True, I tend to feel this way about all his starts. I certainly don't look upon him as an ace. My expectations were along the lines of last year - close to a .500 pitcher.

Bah, Reyes with the error, Janssen with the BS, game to the bottom of 9 tied at 6.

Maybe Edwin hits his third of the game.
