THE 2016 NHL DRAFT-DAY THREAD

I really don't want to get into a bidding war with Edmonton for defense but Jebus, we need some help there.

Let them win the bidding war, and, McDavid is ours when they don't have the cap space to sign him to a huge deal coming off his RFA years.

Perhaps teams want to see how things shake out in free agency before setting the price/motivation for trades.

This may very well be true.  Once the free agent pool has been exhausted, teams will turn to trading in order to fill out their rosters as needed.

I'm hoping in a few years people will be talking about the 'Toronto drafting model' and how they need to bring that to their respective teams.

We'll see soon enough when teams start looking to hire Dubas and Hunter away from us.  ;)

I'd be surprised, because I think the Toronto drafting model is really not much different than lots of other teams that have been built with patience and acquiring picks. I don't think there's anything revolutionary happening.

Then why does everyone go on about Detroit?

I guess the Elliot trade is significant but I'm a little surprised bigger deals didn't get done. You'd think Edmonton has to do something at some point.

I am, too, but it also tells me that either teams weren't willing to part with significant picks, or, considering how the draft went, more likely that teams weren't that interesting in moving their more significant pieces for picks in this draft.

Edmonton lucks out again!

I hate them.

I probably won't go through all the posts I missed, but I just wanted to re-up this one.

Because, you know.  They're so thin on scoring forward talent.  :o

They need a D in the WORST way.  Time to stop sitting on their hands and actually build a TEAM.

Time for Chiarelli to seriously start making some move to shore up that back end if they ever hope to contend in the next 2-3 seasons like we all think they should.

Any idea how many defenceman we did draft? I only saw one.

The Kessel trade with Pittsburgh happened on July 1st last year. The trade window seems to open a week or so before draft day and probably closes sometime around a week after UFA season starts.

After that, I think most GMs take the rest of the summer off. They all have each other's numbers, but they probably let each other know that they are gone fishing and not to be disturbed unless there's something that just can't wait. Everybody needs a break now and then.

I would think the Oilers would be trying to do something, but maybe the offers aren't so great, as the Oilers are seen as a team 'trying to do something'.

AUSTON LEAF:16  :D

And so it begins. 1 day after the draft. This is the problem with the media in Toronto. The saviour? No pressure on the 19 year old to impress in his first year with the Leafs.

The strategy implored at this years draft appears to be picking as many 'ready-now' players as they can. I'm sure most around here are sick of this now, but I have to believe it strengthens the chances that Stamkos get signed here, and that the combined prospects from the last few drafts up to today's draft will need to be ready to start competing for spots a lot faster than most of us had previously thought.

Implored?

Lol.this cold medicine is stronger than I thought.

Its the Sun.  Remember Clarkson's cover?

Steve Simmons himself probably took the photo and wrote the headline title because its such a Steve Simmons kind of bold thing to say.
