The Official Guitar Thread

Reviving this thread for all the players out there.  ;)

Thinking about picking up a new axe.  Doing a sort of informal poll:

Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster

vs

Fender Kurt Cobain Signature Mustang

Anyone every owned or is a particular fan of either instrument?  I play mostly punk-to-postrock stuff (a lot of dynamics - clean to heavy).  My cousin, who had a Mustang once upon a time, said the Jazzmaster is the better way to go, but I like the humbucker and single coil option in the KC Mustang.

Let me start by saying I'm a big fan of both those guitars. I used to have a Mustang '65 RI.

But, for the price of one of those you could have all 3 of these:

These are the Squier Vintage Modified Series and I'd urge you to check them out. I'm blown away by them for the price especially if you like to modify.

The biggest difference between the Fender and the Squier versions is the tremolo's are way better on the Fender versions so that's something to consider.

I bought a FSR Squier Cyclone a couple years back and I can't imagine buying a better guitar for $200.

^ I am somewhat into modding, so that does have some sort of appeal to me.  Have you played them?  Is the quality comparable to a, say, a MIM Fender model?

I have a Squier Super-Sonic, which is a fantastic guitar - however, it's one of those rare Squier Vista Series models that were made in Japan and, thus, the quality was actually better than most Squiers I've played before.

Louis, a bit off-topic but given my understanding of your playing style you should consider an old Harmony electric.  The DeArmond pickups are deadly and the guitars are really, really cool.  I've recently got into Harmony acoustics and can tell you the quality is top notch and, given the prices they fetch, are probably one of the best values out there.

The Vista series were good guitars. The vintage modified series is the closest they've come since IMO.

I think they are definitely comparable to the MIM Fenders.

Here's a link to a demo of the Jaguar and Jazzmaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4hkel-Jx9I

I A-B'd the Mustang and I thought the pickups in the Squier sounded better.

Squiers were well made but mine needed a setup and fret dress/level and neck adjustment that I did myself. Now it plays the way I like without any fret buzz. I also swapped out the pickups with some seymour duncans.

It's better than the stock MIM Strat I had with a little work.

I agree with AWAB. The old Harmony's sound awesome and look cool. Here's a pic of my Roy Smeck Stratotone:

Per daplleganger's advice - I went with the Vintage Modified Jazzmaster:

(my kitty decided to bring his toy in the picture. :P)

Will probably buy the Mustang as well in June!

I love this photo.

The honest truth is out of a decent amp, with  minimal mods I think 90% of people would not notice the difference in the sound of the instrument and the other 10% would find the difference negligible.

So I walked into Paul's Boutique today - cool little shop in Kensington. I've got major GAS right now...

I usually write of Jay Turser guitars but this played very well. I paired it with a Fuzzbox and got a Black Keys sound like you wouldn't believe.

Beautiful looking guitar, and a great price too!  I've always thought of Jay Turser similar to Yamaha - but every now and then, they produce a decent gem!

It sounded great right out of the box. Unfortunately I e-mailed them and they already sold it.

In a weird twist of fate, I went L&M on Bloor and they had a sweet used Epiphone Dot on sale for $290!

I've still got to dial it in and do a pickup height adjustment. I'll probably modify it at some point, but its really warm sounding :)

I actually found an MIJ Fender Mustang on eBay, and thanks to a friend of mine from the States, got it up here fairly cheap!

The last one is mint, Westphalen is pretty nifty.

Any recommendations on an acoustic guitarr with a mic for a beginner? I don't want one that is too expensive, but I don't want one that is complete crap either. Fender CD-140SCE any good? Btw gonna take a songwriting course on Berklee soon wehoo.

The Fender CD60CE is a really nice beginner's guitar. I haven't seen the 140.

When you say acoustic guitar with a mic, you mean a pickup? (i.e: an electric acoustic).  Or a guitar and a mic.

Surprisingly enough, Yamaha makes fairly good acoustic/electrics for cheap.  I have an FX310A, which I bought back in 2007, and I still use it for concerts, recording, etc.  On top of which, it was only $400 brand new.  Other than that, Fender and higher end Epiphone electric acoustics are pretty good too.

If you're looking for mics too, the best and nonetheless reasonable options for me are always Shure.  If you're recording instruments an SM57.  If you're using it for vocals, an SM58.

I was looking at that one too, I just think it's difficult, because once I bought a cheap one and it sounded like crap, then I tried a more expensive one and it sounded a lot better, not sure which material I should look for either.

I mean with a pickup..I'm gonna use the guitarr for recording, and I want to be be able to sit home and jam a bit too, I have another one, but it sounds awful, then I have a good one but it doesn't have a pickup.
