The Official Guitar Thread

I was looking at that one too, I just think it's difficult, because once I bought a cheap one and it sounded like crap, then I tried a more expensive one and it sounded a lot better, not sure which material I should look for either.

It's absolutely fair to say that if you're going to spend more money you're generally speaking going to get better quality but you really don't have to spend a ton of money to get a good guitar.

If you can, get to a guitar store and sit down with a few and see what you like. Like I said, I really liked that Fender but not everything fits for everyone.

Anyone know any reputable Toronto guitar shops where I could get a guitar repaired?  Doesn't necessarily have to be a guitar shop per se, even a general music shop.  I'm thinking Long & McQuade?  Steve's Music Store?  Paul's Boutique?

My late father's acoustic Ibanez (circa 1970's) guitar has come apart and has been in disrepair for over a decade.  Fretboard/neck & strings need repairing.  Not that I'm much of a guitar player, if at all, (my lifelong passion been piano), but I could probably learn to play basic guitar since I have an understanding of the piano (musical) scales in general, etc.

For guitar beginners, here's a good reference:

Anyways, back to the topic of guitar repairs, here's a price list from Paul's Boutique in (downtown) Toronto:
Electric guitars: $50 plus strings
Electric Basses: $50 plus strings
Acoustic Guitars: $45 plus strings
Classical Guitars: $45 plus strings
Locking Tremolo Systems: $90 plus strings
Banjos & Mandolins: $45 plus strings

I was actually thinking of this (expensive) but the guitar here seems overall sizable  or suited for those with a smaller grip.  It's a package with everything including the acoustic  guitar of one's choice, and includes visual lessons (30 songs/30 DVDs)  by Keith Urban, scale/chord poster, strings, case, etc., etc.  A 50 piece set.  However, this product doesn't seem available for shipping to Canada.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!  :)

Superfuzz Audio at Dundas/Dovercourt are my guys.  The downside is it's cash only, but they're very good and priced very well.

Shyboy & Tex at Queen/Bathurst are pretty good too.

Yeah to be clear the prices listed there are for set-ups, not repairs. While set-ups are important and an older guitar is almost certainly going to need one they're the equivalent of getting your car tuned up, not fixed. Actual repairs are almost certainly going to be pricier. Typically you're talking about 50 bucks or so per hour of work plus any needed parts.
