The Official Weather Thread

Canadian scientist Robert Sandford warns about how climate change will affect water cycles and why it will lead to more potential storms...

...warmer air can hold more moisture. Thus, as temperatures rise due to the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the water vapour content of the atmosphere will increase, and this will set off a 'water vapour feedback', where the increase in water vapour ? one of the strongest greenhouse gases ? will increase the warming already experienced due to the other greenhouse gases, which will, in turn, increase the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere, and so on. All this extra water vapour in the atmosphere will be at the expense of water locked up in the snow pack, and in the ground, and this is expected to disrupt the water cycle.

"What we're seeing as a consequence of that is more extreme weather events," said Sandford. "In 2005, for example, there was a two-hour storm in Toronto that caused $700 million worth of damage, mostly water-related and transportation infrastructure."

Sandford also talked about "massive water vapour rivers" moving water around the world to places where it doesn't usually go, causing heavy rains in California, and flooding in Australia and Pakistan.

It's a also being called a "nasty Nor'easter", "The Perfect Storm"....

It's really Mother Nature's version of Halloween!  :)

"A-rooooooooooooo!!"

I feel bad for the folks in Atlantic Canada, always bearing the remnants of any hurricane or storm that passes enroute that area.

50 to 100 mm of rain expected over both Southern & Eastern Ontario including high winds between Monday & Tuesday, courtesy of Hurricane Sandy.  Power outages may be expected.  It's best to be prepared and be ready.

The more it rains, the worse the flooding will get, possibly causing that to basements in homes and overflowing of city sewers.  As long as Sandy doesn't bring hurricane-force winds, it's brunt shouldn't be so terrible.

And it has already been raining here in Guelph for most of the weekend. I even heard there was some wet snow for a short time on Sunday.

The wind field from Sandy is incredibly huge. Hopefully people on the eastern seaboard managed to get themselves away from the immediate danger.

Yeah but they get fresh lobster.  So there's that.

I'm north of Toronto and it's coming down pretty hard and blowing even harder. I just picked up the kids from school and I'm minus one umbrella. - Gust hit me so hard that when it turned the umbrella inside-out, it broke.

Some power outages being reported in Waterloo and Elmira areas. Plenty of standing water in the streets in my part of town as well. Seeing as my referee's meeting was cancelled, think I'll stay in, watch a movie, and put on the coffee pot.

My basement flooded a few years ago and we had to rip out all the completely ruined carpets. There's 4 rooms in my basement, 2 are tiled and 2 have ugly barren concrete floors where the ruined carpet once was. Here's betting my basement's going to flood again :-\

Winds 60 gusting to 90 here in Guelph right now. The rain just started again.

Just watching some of the coverage from New York City - sounds like four feet of water has gotten into some of the subways, Battery tunnel flooded, who knows how bad Atlantic City is where the storm came ashore.

Here in North York where I am, no power outage so far.  I've got my flashlight with me just in case, so that wherever I am in the house I won't be without some light.

My neighbour has two large trees that are sashaying but holding their own in the wind.  We're hoping nothing major happens because if it did, they'd land on our roof.

As if the flooding isn't bad enough;

What's next? Sharks with freakin' lasers attached to their heads?

That shark thing is crazy.

Hope everyone out there did ok last night.  Other than the power going out 5-6 times here, we were all good.
