Damn you Busta! Thanks for letting me have that one | though

As per @tsnbobmckenzie Buf retains roughly $1.4 mil of Vanek's salary. Sabres offered Vanek to Toronto along with willingness to eat salary.

DarrenDreger: Vanek offer to Leafs was made 3-4 days ago, but, told there was no deal to be made.

That's interesting. Not that the Leafs need another scoring winger. I'm curious as to what they were looking for in return from the Leafs.

Vanek to Toronto makes no sense to me.  Which winger would he bump out of the top 6? (I'm assuming someone like JvR or Lupul would have to go the other way...and right now, I'd prefer JvR and Lupul!)

Yeah like you and busta I'm having a hard time wondering what the return would have been and how it would have made sense for the Leafs. Perhaps that's why it may have never gotten past the "offered" stage.

Well, given that it's kind of a transitional top 6 regardless I don't think that's too big a problem. The guy's a 40 goal scorer. Short of Kessel, I think you can make room.

As for what would go the other way I'm guessing that Buffalo made the deal looking to stockpile picks so they'd probably not be looking for guys with multiple, well-compensated years left on a deal but assets more similar to what they got from NYI like picks and an expiring deal.

DarrenDreger: Based on return Sabres received from Isles for Vanek, clearly the Leafs or other clubs weren't willing to pay similar price.

For a deal to work for the Leafs, it would really have to be cap-neutral. So, that would either mean the Sabres holding on to a larger portion of Vanek's cap hit - which would increase the acquisition price - or the Leafs would have to have sent one of their larger contracts the other way (or Liles + another more valuable contract). For the sort of upgrade they'd be getting in what is already an area of strength for the team, it's hard to find a deal that really makes sense for the Leafs.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Another wrinkle in the Vanek deal: if the 1st round pick NYI sent Buff ends up top 10 in June, Isles have option to defer the pick to 2015

Real_ESPNLeBrun: So it's Isles' option to either have Buffalo pick this year or next if it's top 10. A little insurance for Isles

An additional detail on the 1st round pick has surfaced:

If the Islanders 2014 1st round pick ends up in the top 10, they have the option giving the Sabres the 2015 1st round pick instead.

Even if it ends up in the top 10, I'd rather give up the pick this year in what's supposedly a weak draft than tempt fate and have that pick potentially end up being McDavid.

It's insurance only insofar as the Islanders are likely to play better in 2014-15 than this year.  With their goaltending situation, not to mention their defense, I'm not sure I'd take that bet.

WHAT?? You can build something like this into a trade???

This is just a shot at Burke who like the deal then or now was horribly irresponsible for not protecting the 1st round pick the first year.

Because Boston wouldn't have done the deal if they were lottery protected.

The other example I can think of is St. Louis in the Erik Johnson trade.

So it'll be a top 10 pick, they'll defer it only to see it turn into the first overall.

lol...if vanek leaves to sign elsewhere they definitely should keep the pick in the mcdavid draft!

even if this years is quite high.

I'm still upset with Floyd Smith trading our first round pick for Tom Kurvers that ended up being Scott Niedermayer.
