Thomas Vanek traded to NYI

For those keeping score at home;

Vanek w/ the Islanders: GP 16. G 6. A 6. PTS 12
Moulson w/ the Sabres: GP 18. G. 4. A 7. PTS 11

As Sheldon would say, 'Neener-neener.'

More importantly

NYI Pre-trade: 4-4-3
NYI Post-trade: 5-14-2

Buffalo Pre-trade: 2-10-1
Buffalo Post-trade: 5-12-1

Good job NYI.

This is almost as short sighted as the Ryan Smyth Trade.

At least they have a chance to unload Vanek before the deadline, unlike they did with Smyth.  They won't be getting their own likely very high pick back, of course.

I think it could have been a reasonable move...if the very next day Snow went out and got his team an actual goaltender.

I'm pretty sure Sheldon would point out that Vanek has more goals and more points in less games, and would tell you not to judge the results of an experiment until after it had concluded. :P

Yeah, one probably shouldn't use their neener-neener's on instances where the end result is one where they're still wrong, just not to the degree some predicted.

Depends if the experiment is to have Vanek get more points or have Vanek help the Islanders make the playoffs.

That experiment hasn't concluded, either. The Islanders do have the benefit of playing in the weakest division in the league. It's not over for them. I mean, look at the Flyers - it wasn't that long ago that people were writing them off, and now, they're only 3 points out of a playoff spot. In that division, a good two weeks, and you're right back in the hunt.

Oh I know, I'm just pointing out that that is probably the way to view the deal since that is likely what the Islanders had in mind.

Why they went after more offense and not goaltending though is very strange.

Well, that and wins and losses aren't solely determined by Thomas Vanek.

Yup. And probably a couple of d-men too.

They've also been missing Nabokov for about a month. And while his numbers this season are pretty bad, they were respectable last season. So if he can return and play not-awful it could at least push them out of the bottom-5 at least.

Also, just found this funny, like you said Philly is now 3 spots out of a playoff spot but still bottom-5 in the league. Man, the Metropolitan blows.

Well, the Islanders and strange go hand in hand. I guess they figured Nabokov would turn it around, because, goalies who are pushing 40 do that all the time . . .

Bottom 6, but, yeah, all the teams not holding a playoff spot in the Metro are in the bottom 10 in the league.

I can see them being big players in the off-season.

If their pick winds up where it is right now, my guess is they'll hold on to it and run the risk of what could happen in 2015.

At that point the onus is on GM Snow to find a goalie, beef up the defense, hope that guys like Strome, Reinhart, Nelson are ready, but it is doable.

Like Busta said, even this season it's not over yet.
