TOP 5 PICK!!!

Article highlighting why Galchenyuk could be the riskiest pick of the draft, but also why he is ranked so high regardless.

So if this is such a big risk, why do I have Galchenyuk ranked third? As I explained in the first five write-ups I posted, I felt there was a very large gap between him and my #4 prospect Filip Forsberg. If that gap was close at all talent-wise, I actually would have ranked Galchenyuk ninth because of the uncertainty risk and the relative closeness of talent level between my #4 and #8 prospects. However as I stated in that column, Galchenyuk is one of the three legitimate star-level talents in the draft and is much more gifted than Forsberg or Teravainen and therefore I'm willing to swallow the risk for the significant difference in upside. I don't think it is likely Galchenyuk would have fallen off so that's why I don't drop him out of the top 10, as he is an immensely talented all-around player who works his tail off, but the risk is the very real chance it could have happened.

I'm saying it: I hate the way Galchenyuk skates. He isn't slow but he's awkward at times almost standing on his ankle. Looks like a knee injury waiting to happen. (Again I guess)

Some recent stuff I'm reading/hearing has Galchenyuk rising and Grigorenko falling. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Wrote prospect profiles for Filip Forsberg and Nail Yakupov for the site. Check them out if you need a better sense of the players. Mikhail Grigorenko and Alex Galchenyuk coming soon. I figure the Leafs are bound to draft one of those four players.

I've seen Galchenyuk play and don't recall thinking 'ankleburner', at all.

Here's some screen captures of what I'm talking about:

Take note on the capture in the bottom left, he isn't on his toe but the full inside edge of his skate. It's very unusual. I'm not sure many could even do it, I certainly could never bend my ankle that far.

He's a very dynamic player but his skating quirks make me wonder about his career longevity.

I don't think that bottom, middle one is even him (or if it is it isn't showing anything odd).

They're all him. All number 94 and taken from his YouTube highlight videos. The one you're mentioning happens during an awesome highlight reel goal.

I feel like I want to go into hiding for this draft.  I almost don't even want to know how this pans out for the Leafs.  I'm worried the pick gets traded away on some magic beans, or we get the same deal as the Brayden Schenn draft .. Burke doesn't get his guy.

I can't tell which is him in that, it doesn't look like any player's ankles are in trouble, and it looks like the player in the dark jersey splitting between the two Sarnia players (although I can't verify that).

Sadly, this is a Leafs fan mentality after so many years of disappointment.  We expect to be let down.

That one is 15 seconds into this video:

Craig Button's final list is out:

His list is dramatically different than many others. While I'm not sure what to make of some of his choices, I think this does suggest the differences that teams will have in each of their lists and they won't resemble the typical rankings and mock drafts we see that more or less mimic each other with one or two subtle differences.

Incidentally, Dumba is growing on me.

Grigorenko at 20 is a bit of a joke, sure he might drop some because of the Russian factor, but the guy was predicted to go second overall by many about a month ago.

EDIT: Murray at #13? COME ON!!!

Re. Dumba... Like I said earlier, he was my "first favorite" prospect. I just love the clips and reports and when I saw him at the combine, I was shocked by his physique. That said, my only reservation with him would be that same that I'd have with a small(ish) power forward in that I'd be concerned about his longevity.
