TOP 5 PICK!!!

I apologize for an off topic posting, but Leaf fans can take solace that our luck is not as bad as the Blue Jackets'.  In a year where there is a consensus number one choice in the draft, they lose the lottery and drop down to second.  Their other first round choice, obtained from LA in the Carter deal, was expected to be 17th and will now be last because LA won the Cup.

You neglected to mention that their top scorer and face of the franchise wants to be traded ASAP. Real bummer for Columbus.

Fortunately for Columbus, they have the option to choose between this year's pick or next year's pick.

The Oilers just signed dman Oscar Klefbom, last years 19th overall pick. It might indicate that they aren't as desperate to pick defence as some have speculated.

I did not know that.  Smart move by Howson; he needs a few of those to save his job.

Signing a prospect doesn't change the fact that they need some experienced help back there.

Of course, there has been mainly two arguments made for them trading the first pick, to get established defensive help back there or because they want to draft defence. I think if you subscribe to them wanting more prospect defence then this singing is indicative of the fact they are far from barren in that department.  The reality though is it's a combination of both.

They have a number of very good depth defence prospects, but no real 1st pairing types (a couple maybes in Klefbom and Marincin, though they're more likely to really be 2nd pairing guys that can play bigger minutes). What they need are guys with true top pairing potential, which is why the talk is all about them going for Murray.

Alex Galchenyuk: Height- 72.5 inches, Wing Span- 75.5 inches and Weight is 194 lb #NHLCombine

That's 6'0.5". Central Scouting has had him listed as that all along, but every other source had him an inch or two bigger.

Maybe they're forgetting to take his skates off.  :P

If you missed it @DarrenDreger said his sense is Oilers don't simply take Yakupov at No. 1. Need to add on defence, perhaps by trading down.

So how far "down" would they trade?  I can't see them dropping to #5.  They risk not getting the dman they really want.  I can see them dropping to #3 though however.  :-\

Would Tinordi + 3 do it?

I'd say probably.

Murray + Tinordi for Yakupov essentially.  Edmonton gets 2 great prospects for 1 (in which is a little redundant for them anyways).  I'd actually do that from both sides.

Yak to the Habs makes a lot of sense.

I really don't think the difference between Yakupov and Grigo or Gally is big enough to trade away a top prospect on a team. I think the Habs would be fine staying where they are and picking one of those centres.

The Maple Leaf president/GM was furious on Monday over a Hockey Night in Canada report that suggested there are ?rumblings? throughout the NHL that Burke is prepared to trade defenceman Luke Schenn to the Edmonton Oilers for the No. 1 overall pick in this month?s entry draft.

?Typical of Hockey Night,? said Burke. ?I have never discussed this trade or any trade involving Luke Schenn to Edmonton.?

Burke "lies" all the time - he's a freaking lawyer. The correct question would be "has anyone in the Leafs organization or anyone you have been in contact with either directly or indirectly discussed anything at all to do with Schenn with anyone etc etc remotely involved with the Oilers.

I could go on forever...

The key to that statement is really that he says "to Edmonton" rather than "with Edmonton." Burke is involved in discussions about any deal that may get made, regardless of who is in contact with the other team's head office.

Yeah, the thing that has become apparent over the years is that it's Nonis and / or Claude Loiselle who would do most of the heavy lifting here.

I picture Burke making the final call with a custom made Blackberry that has just three buttons "YES", "NO", and "GTFO"
