Toronto trades Holzer to Anaheim for Brewer and a 2016 5th

Yep, they kind of bought themselves going up from a 7th to a 5th by eating Brewer's remaining salary

EDIT: with all the D Anaheim added today, Holzer may have just been a throw in and the money bought the pick.

Who's keeping track, the Leafs have seemed to pick up quite a few draft picks the last little while.

They've added 5 draft picks since the Franson trade. NAS 1st, PIT 4th, ANA 5th, STL 6th in 2015 and PIT 2nd in 2016.

It's a start, but we're going to need to add a lot more in the next couple of years (hopefully starting at 5 he draft).

Still only two picks in the top 60, which is disappointing.

Maybe a couple more can be acquired before draft day after the playoffs are over.

Yep, I'm expecting more moves around then.

I mean really at this point can the Leafs go in to next season with Lupul, Bozak, Phanuef and Kessel on this team?

Brewer, Horton.. If Paul Coffey wasn't retired I'd think this team was working on a strange marketing plan with Tim Hortons.

Correct me if I"m wrong, but is Holzer not a pending UFA.  He also has a concussion.  So we got something for a guy who at his worst may not even play another game and at best is a depth defenseman.  He's also exactly the kind of guy that would be available July 3rd if the Leafs want to bring him back.  In fact he's likely a guy who doesn't have a contract until the end of July.

Holzer was definitely a UFA.

As someone else mentioned, this was likely just a financial get out of jail trade for Anaheim.

The leafs also told Holzer they'd try and get him to a playoff team.

Two birds one stone.

This deal was probably more about ditching Brewer's contract than it was acquiring a 8/9 defenceman. Despite often being a contending team the Ducks have usually had to work within an internal budget that is much lower than the actual cap. They added about $2.5mil to their budget in the Wisniewski trade so this helps soften that blow for the rest of the season.

I can't see it.

Of those four, I think Phaneuf and Kessel need to go before next season. They both symbolize what's wrong with the current Leafs, while still having potential value for other teams. Phaneuf does seem to care and is a good but overpaid and miscast defenseman. Kessel has tons of talent but his attitude seems to have slipped. Both will be too old when the rebuild is complete.

Bozak and Lupul aren't part of the future either, but I think their importance and the urgency of moving them is secondary.

Nonis has done well in ridding the Leafs of the Clarkson albatross, but if he's to make a case for himself being Leaf GM through the rebuild, he needs to prove it by getting maximum value for those two players.
