Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

I think if they are going to run Sandin out all year, Marincin will start the year, but then be sent down once Dermott and Hyman get back.  The only scenario that works with Sandin in the lineup and not running 20 players is having Holl as a spare and Marincin with the Marlies.

Yeah, I thought that it wasn't possible to fit Sandin's AAV in when Dermott and Hyman return, but if we run a roster with 12 forwards (with Gauthier being one of them) and 7 defencemen (with Sandin on the team and Holl being the spare roster guy) then Capfriendly shows us as having a whopping $3,134 in remaining cap space.

That's what mine also says.  So watch for Holl to make the team as if he gets claimed (unlikely, but...) we are totally boned in November.

Oh and by the way, some roster permutations will only allow 20 players on the roster when everyone is healthy:

Matthews 11634 Rielly 5000 Andersen 5000
Tavares 11000 Muzzin 4000 Hutch 700
Marner 10983 Ceci 4500
Nylander 6962.366 Barrie 2750 Kessel 1200
Kerfoot 3500 Dermott 863.333
Johnsson 3400 Sandin 894.167
Kapanen 3200
Hyman 2250
Mikheyev 925
Moore 775
Petan 775
Spezza 700

Total (in thousands) 81011.866

Not enough room for a 21st there.

Goatwhisperer is right.... I made a mistake above and had Marner's vanity cap hit incorrect.

Only way to have a 21 player roster with Sandin, Hyman, and Dermott is to have Goat as the 12th F and Holl as the 7th D.  (Unless you demote Mickey or Moore and bring in a cheaper forward, then you can afford a 7th D that is marginally more expensive than Holl)

Matthews 11634 Rielly 5000 Andersen 5000
Tavares 11000 Muzzin 4000 Hutch 700
Marner 10893 Ceci 4500
Nylander 6962.366 Barrie 2750 Kessel 1200
Kerfoot 3500 Dermott 863.333
Johnsson 3400 Sandin 894.167
Kapanen 3200 Holl 675
Hyman 2250
Mikheyev 925
Moore 775
Spezza 700
Goat 675 TOTAL 81496.866

Put Nylander on PP1 you cowards; it's not like he's going to make any more money off a better production season

Well, you may agree with me there, but you're going to hate me now...

Marincin is not an NHL defenseman.  I get that none of the other options are good either, and maybe this is the devil that Babcock knows, but come on...this guy again?

They're going to have some problems this year if some injuries creep up.

Marincin is pretty fine for bottom-pairing duties, and he checks a ton of boxes in 700k. Plays both sides of the D pair, PK specialist, can actually skate (better than Ceci at the moment) and move the puck into the right zone.

You do realize that this very true statement thrusts a rapier into the heart of any Leafs Cup hopes, right?

Ceci taking up $4M and we have to cut corners to have guys like Gauthier (sorry Whisperer ) on the roster.

There's only so much puck to go around. If he was on PP1 I'd imagine it'd be him in the slot position and Tavares back in front of the net and Willie would probably be the forgotten guy like Kadri was last season. At least this year on PP2 he'll have Barrie and Spezza to play with.

They wan't Goat in the locker room because he's a great guy, 6'5 every shift and takes the guys out on Taco Tuesday for dinner.

We could move Hyman once he's healthy to open up some space.  If you look at the top 9, there's really only 1 spot available, and that could be easily filled by a guy like Moore.

Kapanen - Tavares - Marner
Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Moore

Seriously, though, somebody making millions is getting traded: Hyman, Ceci, maybe one of Johnsson/Kappy (ugh).  This kind of pridhamizing on the edge of a cliff all season is horsecrap.

Let us now consider playing powerplays with two pucks, no whistles, and only ends when both pucks are in a net (doesn't matter which one) or two minutes is up.

Yes on a serious note it sucks.  IMO I'd rater trade Ceci's cap for literally anything and gamble with the D we have than trade any of Hyman/Kappy/Mango.

You've only been here for an hour or so but already you've established a high level of sagacity.  Well done.

So if we're correct about the team wanting Sandin on the roster and that meaning Gauthier/Holl have more or less secured spots because of their AAVs that means at one point or another the following players will all be placed on waivers this season:

Aberg, Agostino, Petan, Shore, Timashov for forwards.
Gravel, Harpur, Marincin, Schmaltz for defencemen.

Gotta think we lose some of those guys to waivers. That'll hurt for depth purposes but at least it'd open up spots on the contracts list.

His name is GoatWhisperer- I'd question his sagacity.

(But he's right that Ceci should be moved well before any of Hyman, Mango, Kappy)

One thing that we're going to have to get used to is rotation at the bottom of the roster, year after year.  5 of those guys were signed this summer pretty much off the scrap heap...they only drafted one of those guys.

I thought someone said that Timashov was exempt?
