Training Camp

Looks like camp will open on Sunday:

Some information about who will be at camp:

Lance Hornby ‏@sunhornby
Marlies left Scrivens, Holzer, Fraser, Gardiner, Frattin, Kadri and Kostka in Toronto to get ready for Leaf camp as they went to St. John's

Michael Traikos ‏@Michael_Traikos
Colborne and Ashton will not be at #Leafs camp. Might tell you a lot about why Bos/TB were willing to part with those 1st-round prospects

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
Leafs prospect Morgan Reilly will draw attention at camp. It's possible but not probable he makes NHL roster. Will likely play full 5 games.

I don't quite see what Ashton or Colborne have done to warrent invites.. Both to me seem to be huge disappointments.. Werent Luca Caputi and Philip Paradis supposed to be nhlers as well some day? Not sure what those dudes are doing now

I'm kind of surprised that Reilly is even going to be at camp. Not so much that he doesn't deserve a shot, but that in a shortened season, it looks best to me that he stay in junior to build on his great season thus far. I'm sure it won't hurt all that much, but I think it's a safe bet that he doesn't stick, through no fault of his and it just feels right to just let him stay with his junior team.

Giving Kostka a shot is a good move IMO.

Colborne has and impressive PPG pace in the NHL (albeit in a small sample size). It never hurts to give your "higher end" prospects the experience of camp, where they can learn from the pros without the pressure of the games.

There's not really a spot for Colborne on the roster ATM with Bozak/Connolly/Grabbo/McClement/Steckel but I don't get the thinking behind keeping him out of camp.

The one bonus might be more playing time and responsibility with the Marlies with all the other players absent, something he's been missing this year IMO.

a few trades here and there and more Marlies can be brought up. I would like to see Hamilton be given a look for the bottom six.

I know he's been pretty much ignored since being sent down (and maybe even before that), but maybe we shouldn't be counting Orr out so quickly. Mirtle says he's changed his body and his game:

We know Carlyle likes his tough guys.

Probably just because it is such a short camp, they're not taking everyone they usually would.

Although in another article it is mentioned that winning a spot is unlikely for him.

Is Orr coming to camp?

According to Jonas Siegel, Orr has trimmed down and is fighting hard to get back on the club so I assume this means yes.

I'm sort of disappointed Ryan Hamilton didn't get an invite.  While he'll likely be a prime candidate to be called up and fill in for injuries, I think he merited a look at camp.  And certainly leadership, grit, and some third line scoring punch couldn't hurt the team.

They have a few days to get the lineup in order.  It's not going to change much from what we already know.

It's important to remember that due to the very short camp, Carlyle is only bringing in 30 players. I'm sure a normal camp would have seen all the guys mentioned here getting a shot.

Actually, with the high calibre of players leaving the roster, I feel it was a smart decision not to. However, if injuries on the Leafs Roster make it so that they need a callup in the future from the Marlies, I think he'll be on the top of the list.

And yet we all have this religiosity of prospects for some reason.

If a guy's on the Marlies and playing a significant role, what's the point in bringing them to camp for evaluation purposes?

You're assuming he doesn't merit being on the team?  The guy is having a great season, playing at a high level, and is in mid-season form right now.  I think he could really help the club.

No, I'm saying that in the course of a usual season the way to determine if an AHL player deserves a call-up is his play in the AHL. If the AHL season is on-going, why does the presence of a NHL camp change that? Isn't competing in the AHL a better gauge of his skills then screwing around in a quick NHL camp that most NHL'ers will be taking relatively lightly?

ArashMadani: Looks like most of the #Leafs are back in town. Kulemin and Grabovski are now here, skating at the team's practice facility.

I'm quite interested to see what a slimmed-down Komisarek can do. We really need him to step up and be a better player.
