Training Camp

I'm quite interested to see what a slimmed-down Komisarek can do. We really need him to step up and be a better player.

These guys bulking up is nonsense and people suggesting they should don't know anything about fitness.

You want lean, athletic, powerful players not bodybuilders. I don't care how much the guy can deadlift, this is hockey not powerlifting. Leaning out and focusing more on pure overall athleticism is much better approach for these guys and I'm happy to see them figure that out.

Im really rooting for Orr to get back in the game, I felt bad for him when he was sent down.

I'm honestly not expecting much from either Komisarek or Orr.  Neither of them are the greatest skaters in the world, how much better can they be now that they've "slimmed down"?  I guess they could prove me wrong.

But will Carlyle find them more valuable than Wilson did ?

Guess it depends.  I see Komisarek as the more realistic chance of sticking, since he's had shot blocking success in the past, something that Carlyle stresses with his players.  With Orr, he's really someone slotted to the 4th line, Leafs have guys like Steckel, Brown, Frattin, McClement, Lombardi, Connolly..I can't see where Orr would beat out some of those guys.

Edit: forgot about this Komarov guy too, reports are saying he's a pest/energy type player too.

Double Edit: It's fairly sad that i've slotted Connolly down with the bottom 6 forwards considering he was originally supposed to help one of the top 2 lines.

So the coach has to decide if he wants a career 4th liner who has declined a bit (may not be the right way to describe Orr) or a top six guy who has declined a lot (Connolly and Lombardi)and doesn't suit the bottom six role.

Connolly or Lombardi would suit more a 3rd line, but there's 5 other guys on that list that would potentially battle Orr for a job on the 4th line.

Colton Orr's demise will go as NHL fighters go, he's not the best hockey player otherwise, at any weight. So if Carlyle doesn't see the need for somebody to break a face now and then, he won't make it.

I think the idea is that Orr is shifting his attention from adding bulk to skating and conditioning. Maybe his skating won't improve that much, but that's his goal.

Exactly, if you look at the list of players even excluding Connolly and Lombardi, you have Steckel - best faceoff man Leafs have -- he's in.  Mike Brown - has played for Carlyle before and is effective in an "energy" type line - he's in.  McClement - a very good penalty killer - he's in.  Then you got Frattin and Komarov.

They're already going to have a hard time fitting what they have in NHL forwards, that there is no room for Colton Orr IMO.

Then you have to deal with one too many centers and maybe a winger also. Nonis has to trade two or three of them, if not just to allow for some promotions. This is where that second year of Connolly is kind of bothersome.

Connolly to Vancouver (Z3)?

Haha No, but without Hodgson and Kesler this year they might take him as a throw in.

p.s. I know you where joking.

Underager can be returned to jr until April 3 (NHL trade deadline/roster freeze). If played in 5 NHL or less games, no contract year burned.

So sounds like Rielly can get 5 games in before he has to be returned... Was 9 in previous years.

Yea, its usually play more than 9 games and it burns a year, due to the shortened seasons, its changed a bit, it will be back to normal next year.

... and hopefully, Gardiner will be back by then.  :-\ I'm assuming Rielly is a lock for his replacement.... Even if only to get him those 5 games.

Really no timeline with these sorts of things.  Hopefully he fully recovers.

Anywhere!

Edmonton doesn't need him (and wouldn't do it) but my first though was straight up for Khabibulin. - Gets rid of Connolly and puts an end to all this Luongo crap.  :)

...sir, I like the way you think!
