Training Camp

I like Komarov too, perhaps they want him to be the defensive conscience of that line, but I think I prefer Frattin there and Komarov on the 4th.

Well, then how do you fit in Brown and Steckel? I mean, the team isn't going to scratch one of the best faceoff guys in the league in Steckel, and Brown is one of the team's best forecheckers. It's a tough spot for the team to be in, but, at least it's a good kind of tough spot.

I hear you, perhaps moving MacArthur to fit Frattin in is the way to go, either that or for now you swap Brown in and out of the lineup.

@DarrenDreger

Tim Connolly not on the ice at Leafs practice. It's expected Connolly will be placed on waivers. More opportunity for players in system.

maybe the islanders can step up and grab him

I did call it yesterday... just sayin'. Apparently, Nonis does have the chestnuts.

Maybe, though I think having Brown and Komarov in every night could be the better way to go. Need to have more of that kind of presence in the lineup.

From what I've heard and read from the management, Komarov is going to be exciting to watch every night. He's going to wake up a lot of NHL players this season. I can't wait to see him play.

I highly doubt anyone claims Connolly, but, it could spark some potential trade discussions since the Leafs have made it clear they don't have a spot for him and are signalling they're likely to be willing to split the cap hit/salary.

I don't think Burke would have taken this measure with Lombardi and Connolly, I like this Nonis guy.

I think he might have with Lombardi, but, waiving Connolly? I agree, unlikely.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Tough decisions, but I think they're the best for the team. It's tough to see a guy not cut the mustard, but at the same time, you have to ice the best team.

This.

It's exactly what's needed to be done.  (* applause *) to Nonis.

Very definitely will free up space for the team to utilize the players they are going want in their line-up, and to create more probabilities/pairings for lines.

Good article on Rielly's experience at camp.

It was a development the teenager himself didn't believe initially.

"It was obviously a pretty cool experience when I came in," said Rielly, picked fifth overall by the Leafs in last June's draft. "He told me we were partners, but I thought he was kidding at first. I was like, 'Whatever.' But I checked the roster and it was true so it was pretty cool. He helped me a lot on the ice, kind of chatting with me and trying to give me some confidence and it helped a lot."

The decision to put the kid and the captain together came after Rielly and head coach Randy Carlyle had a chat following Tuesday's practice.

"I had a conversation with Morgan Rielly about getting him to play more of his game," Carlyle explained. "I asked him what his strengths were and he said his number-one strength was his skating so I said, 'Well, I don't know if we've really saw you skate in the first couple of days. We saw you skate and pass the puck, but not really get up on your toes and get up the ice.' And maybe there wasn't much of an opportunity to do that, but I thought it was important that he feels comfortable and plays to his strengths."

"He was open with me and asking me how camp's going and how I've been playing and he was extremely helpful," said Rielly. "He just wanted to chat. I think he understands I'm 18 and, you know, it's a pretty hard experience with all these guys. He was extremely open."

I wonder what the plan is if he clears.

Trade him or send him to the Marlies. No point in buying him out, since it doesn't free up cap space and his contract runs out at the end of the season.
