Tyson Barrie

I agree with your point. We just have a gap in our prospect pool that will take time to build up that we have needed UFA to cover for the time being.

Maybe, but I think it's going to call into question certain decisions that could have been used to improve the prospect pool and has exposed the real failings of what the current group has. For instance, keeping both of Johnsson and Kapanen because despite all the picks used on wingers over the years there aren't any 21 or 22 year olds that the Leafs are confident in giving a shot to.

I don?t see a problem with signing Barrie for a 6-7 year deal but moving on after 3 years if necessary.

I don't want my central point to be lost here. If you, or anyone, think that signing Barrie or Muzzin or whoever is a good use of the extremely limited cap space the Leafs are going to have going forward, that may be the case. My point was really just about how the Leafs are going to need to have very significant pieces come from within and they're going to have to do that without drafting in high spots.

I agree with your point. We just have a gap in our prospect pool that will take time to build up that we have needed UFA to cover for the time being.

That's exactly it. I'm certainly not putting blind faith in Dubas's ability to draft star players from late picks, but it is very early in his tenure as GM, so I'm also not dismissing his picks as missies quite yet either. At the very least I think he deserves a little more time to see what we have and the development of the picks that were made on his watch to date.

In the meantime, he's doing exactly what he should be doing...compiling defencemen as best he can while his draft picks develop. Some of the players he's acquired this off season may just be placeholders while others may fit in well enough to integrate long term on this team.

I'm sure that conversation was had internally, which led to the front office construction we see today. The only thing that can change is what is done going forward.

Love the way Mik seperates himself and gets into the scoring area to receive Tyson's pass.

Liked the Barrie twirl, looping down the wing and the perfect pass out to a waiting Mikheyev in the slot area.

Good job there!

Fakes his pass, dekes and moves out of the zone to create a 4-on-3. These moves at RHD. I just can't overstate the monumental upgrade here.

Barrie clearly unhappy in T.O.  According to HNIC?s Elliotte Friedman, several teams have reportedly inquired about his services:

would be no loss

It's pretty insane to see how it's unfolded for him. There's no way he's as bad as he's shown so far. I guess that goes for the rest of the team, but I definitely would rather have a better two way defender.

Could we flip him for T.J. Brodie out of Calgary?  Wasn't that the original deal that Kadri vetoed?

I still don't get that deal, Brodie is a leftie, weren't the Leafs wanting right hand D, or is he a lefty that plays on the right side?

Brodie is out with Blood clots or some such issue.  Good we didn't trade for him.

I think ultimately they wanted to upgrade their D core.  Maybe they misjudged what they had, or maybe they were worried about what Gardiner would command.  I think if they had come back with a similar d-core to last year then things may be a little better for them right now.  Hard to say.

Gardiner's numbers don't indicate he's doing much better then Barrie. You can pretty much bet that he isn't playing against top opponents as he's 5 in D ice time. Barrie is playing 4 mins more a game. Rielly needs to be better then he has.

That Barrie goal...loved both the Leafs and Keefe?s reaction. Such a positive.  Found myself cheering out loud, too!
