Would a 4.5-5 million Semin fit well on a line with Grabo and Kooly?

Lupul  - JVR    - Kessel
Semin - Grabo  - Kooly

Takes the top six to another level for me, it'll never happen of course.

I get the talent he has and that some team will pay him big bucks, but I really hope it isn't the Leafs. I just don't see this team seriously competing for anything meaningful with him being a big piece of the team; which inevitably he would be given the dearth of top 6 talent.

The buzzword for this free agency period is character. Character guys bring character with their history of being a character locker room presence. Character.

I guess they need something to talk about with the lack of skill on the market.

JVR is a bit of a wild card at the centre spot but yeah, it's a top six though kind of cottony soft...

I'd really like them to trade for Ryan, probably not happening either though.

Steve Simmons constant comparison of Parenteau to Parise based solely on point totals, followed up with "I'm not saying the same guy," tells you all you need to know about him.

EDIT: PA Parenteau is the Jason Blake of this year's UFA class.

On Brodeur, I can't say I watch the devils play often (or ever) but I can't help but believe that he is coasting on his reputation.  Last year:

Goalie #1
-------------
GAA:  2.23
Save Percentage:  .918
SO:  4

Goalie #2
-------------
GAA:  2.41
Save Percentage:  .908
SO:  3

Which of the above is Johan Hedberg?  Which is Martin Brodeur?  They played behind the same team.  Hedberg played 27 games for his 4 shutouts.  Brodeur played 59 for his 3.

If we hire Brodeur, it looks to me like we should expect to get a goaltender who is somewhat worse than Johan Hedberg.  In other words, Martin Brodeur is a well-below league-average starting goaltender right now.

I would expect to see a ~.900 save percentage, quite possibly less, from him next year if he plays behind a Leafs defense that resembles last year's defense.

In other years, this thread would be 70 pages long by now at least.  That is the indication of the level crap that is this year's free agent pool.

“@RealKyper: Like #Flyers the #Wild have thrown the kitchen sink at Parise/Suter. Going rate on  all #NHL offers are now minimum 12 years between 80-90M”

I know we probably stand little chance of attracting either of these two, but the one thing that really bothers me about Burke is that his ridiculous stance on "cap circumventing" deals takes the leafs out of the running before we even have a chance to be considered.

Yeah, but you can't argue with success!
