I know we probably stand little chance of attracting either of these two, but the one thing that really bothers me about Burke is that his ridiculous stance on "cap circumventing" deals takes the leafs out of the running before we even have a chance to be considered.

Yes and no, a 12 year commitment at a high cap hit seems touchy to me. Burke has also said he'd consider it for the right player, no?

Yeah, but you can't argue with success!

If I owned the team, I'd insist he changed that stance or I'd fire him, unless it's ownership that is telling him not to sign deals like this.

I really don't understand how he can operate in this manner, I could see a scenario where we lose Kessel because we refuse to give him a deal like this.

Who is that player though.  If it's Sidney Crosby, well for one, that guy is never going to make it to UFA status and while I'm not thrilled with paying a Parise/Suter that kind of money this is the only way the Leafs are getting any of these guys and his strategy of just buying overpriced Phaneuf's isn't working.

He said he'd never do deals with "bogus" years at the end.

I think that's just a case of knowing your audience. Burke knows that after a long, long drought, if there's one thing Leafs fans are desperate to cheer for, it's principles.

To me, overpriced is just overpriced. I'd be much happier giving one of those two a deal like that than say Richards but even then the potential negative long term consequences can be seen in Luongo to a degree right now.

I don't agree with Burke that it's cap circumvention but I do think it's a risk you can't take lightly.

Instead he overpays mediocre players on short term deals.

Well that's not something I agree with, if it's allowed then why not, where I tend to agree is in the long term effect on the team. To me Parise and Suter are kind of light weight cornerstone players, I don't think that kind of commitment is something the Leafs should be looking at right now.

I could be wrong but this seems like a bad year to make that investment.

They all do at some point. To me you can deal with short term risk a little easier/more productively than long term.

That's called signing free agents. Every team does that.

I know.

I have trouble with being okay with overpaying non-impact players but overpaying for top talent is out question because he refuses to go a couple years longer and tacking on some bogus years at the end due to "morals".
