The -6 rating is kind of bizarre, especially after the Habs game.

It's not really that bizarre. Statistically, he had 2 brutal games (NYR and NYI), where he went a combined -7, and other than that, being that, until recently, the brunt of the offence has come from the Kadri line - one that he doesn't see much ice time with - and the Leafs haven't exactly been offensive dynamos either, so, it actually makes a lot of sense. He wasn't on the ice for many the ES goals in the Habs game (he was, however, on for both PP goals), so, it just wouldn't have had much impact.

Right ... It's just a bit unlucky in a way that despite the 6-0 win his +/- didn't climb at all.

What happens with Komisarek now? It seemed people were saying that he had improved his game yet he sits in the press box ? When Gardiner gets back to Toronto its going to be even more of a logjam. Gunnarsson too.

not an easy call to make for Carlyle, esp. with Gunarsson coming back in soon.  I think Gardiner is going to ride out the year with the Marlies unless things change dramatically on the big club.

We aren't going to see Komisarek for a while.  The guys ahead of him are playing way too well for him to knock one of them out of the lineup.

If things stay like this for the season, I'd think a compliance buyout might be in order.

I think that is just about a guarantee.  It frees up so much cash it's ridiculous... when you have Holzer and Fraser making 1/5th and doing a better job, it's an easy call.

Bingo. In a capped world, Komisarek is a really tough guy to have on the roster. Great to see some other guys doing well under Carlyle, though.

You don't see Gardiner coming back up at all this season? I really hope we do. I'd love to see how he handles Carlyle's system. I think he plays a great offensive game, and will learn to play better 'D' under the new coaches direction. Question is...who sits out?

I would have said Liles or Franson a half dozen games ago, but they have both started to look much better, and both Holzer and Fraser have been solid stay-at-home guys. Tough choice unless there is an injury.

Going forward (at least over the next 2-3 years), having low cost, effective defenders like Kostka, Fraser and Holzer, not to mention affordable ones like Franson, Gunnarson and Gardiner, is going to provide incredible cap flexibility.

I brought this up in the GDT. Right now when everyone is healthy he's 9th on the depth chart. Next season he could drop to 10th depending on how Rielly does. It's pretty much a guarantee that he'll be bought out in the summer.

It's too bad for Komisarek because he actually wasn't playing that poorly this season, but at his contract there are guys that can do the same or better than him for far less money.

So if Nonis buys out Komisarek and frees up $4.5 plus take MacArthur's $3.25, letting him walk as UFA, he's in a very nice position to make a giant offer to a certain Ducks centre or winger, and still have about $14 mil more to spend.

The amnesty buyout on Komisarek is a no brainer.

I think it's a less crazy idea than it has been in the past. Komisarek still isn't a great trade chip but with only one year left on his deal and a disparity between dollars owed and cap hit being able to move him wouldn't stun me.

I wouldn't be surprised at all, if they were working on a deal to send him somewhere right now. I mean, there always seems to be a lot of teams looking for defensemen, Komisarek's deal is just more tolerable now. 3.5 million of money on a 4.5 million cap hit for one year, as you say, is a bit easier to move, in theory.

The problem, I guess, is that with a bunch of teams looking to clear salary to make next year's cap work I'd bet that it's going to be something of a buyer's market in terms of guys like Komisarek.

You're probably right about that. We're dropping what? 6 million and change next season for the max?

But for teams trying to hit the floor (Isles) he is appealing.  Isles have two expensive UFA d-men coming up in Visnovski and Streit.  They need to fill those voids somehow.

It would be interesting to know what other teams think of Komisarek.
