Sabres @ Leafs - Oct. 15th, 7:00pm - TSN4

To put it mildly, that is not very good on the coach's part.
Tavares was out. His stars were obviously gassed.
The kid had not done anything major wrong.
He's so smooth and fast, he'd be great at 3 on 3 offensively.

This accidental benching happens most often to zippy wingers who are offense-oriented but not elite level, and considered defensive liabilities during a lead. I don’t get losing him in the second period and not getting him ramped back up in the third. Of course they have this plan for lead protection deployment, which they need to rethink posthaste. He definitely should’ve been rotated in after Tavares’ injury/exit.

After that midway point of the third, I understand not exposing McKenna out there for OT while he’s been cold for so long.

It was dumb. At some point he was too cold to get on the ice sure, but the whole thing is just dumb. Now it's a crappy talking point, might have cost the team a point, and everyone looks dumb.

I went to bed with a 4-2 lead, wake up to find out not only did they blow it, but McKenna benched and played under 7 minutes the entire game.

Who the hell benches the #1 overall pick 7 games into a season? Very Babcockian thing to do.

Get him to do some jumping jacks in the tunnel. A few deep knee bends. Holy fawk.

It's infuriating. On one side, I get what Hiller is trying to do. If Hiller puts 92 on the ice in OT and they get scored on, the knives will come out. I get he's trying to protect him.

The kid is ELITE in skating, stick handling and he has shown he has a wicked shot. He can even back check. Hiller needs to start trusting McKenna more. I haven't seen anything out of 92 that says he can't be trusted.

To go up 4-2 and all of the sudden you try to become the 1995 New Jersey Devils is beyond idiotic on Hiller's part.

That fourth line was playing awesome last night. The EXACT type of fourth line shifts you want. Hammering the opposing D, keeping possession and cycling it around the offensive zone. Then Hiller decides to bench MacEwen? What an idiot.

So he's cold on the bench. Send him back to the locker room to stretch, hop on the bike, take a few shots and warm up. Have him go for a skate during the tv breaks (there were five them them after his last shift). There is little to risk doing that. Guy is just sitting there doing nothing anyway.

Even if he was being disciplined, and there is no sign from his play or his coach that he was, the needs of his team have to come first. His team was visibly gassed. I'm struggling to think of a worse Leafs coaching decision on the bench in the last couple of decades. I'm sure someone can think of something but this has to be up near the top of the list.

As I'm typing this, I wonder "when did he call a timeout for his gassed team?"
I can't find one in the play by play. This was a problem with him in LA - he forgets to use his timeouts. Did the NHL stats folks mess up? I do not recall him taking a timeout .... I'm dumbfounded why he wouldn't: they were gassed and gave up 2 goals ...

The identity of this team is clearly not defense. I'm ok with that. There was not a scenario where you could revamp the team and make it both offensively and defensive stout.

Sitting back seems to be Hiller's only approach to trying to protect leads and I have no idea why we are doing that when we don't have the horses for it.

Their options were very limited on the UFA market for defensive dmen.

The '99 Quinn team, similarly defensively challenged, did run & gun to the Conf finals but they could ride Cujo in his prime. I do not think the present goaltending tandem is up to that. As well, the game has changed.

Back then, the same coaching criticism was around: the forwards were not doing their fair share defensively. It was fair criticism.

Nobody is giving away top 4 dmen. It is tricky for them for cap reasons this season and next.

They spent a lot of dough supposedly upgrading the 3/4 lines. I haven't seen much from the 4th line. If they want to make the playoffs, to me, it will be the forwards making the improved, dedicated defensive effort that will decide it. With their D, it harder to teach old dogs new tricks.

On a positive note, Cowan is continuing to generate puck battles on the forecheck where I didn't think there could be one. I hope he can keep that up. He's really buzzing. To me, at times, it feels like some of the best forechecking I can recall in recent years. It is quite an improvement as I was not impressed with his defensive game during the Calder Cup playoffs. Collectively, I think the club seems to have better skating speed than I expected. That could help them defensively if they use it.

Wasn’t it Hiller who cost the Kings a playoff series against the Oilers not long ago. If I recall they were up in the series and up 2 goals late in a game were scored on and he challenged a goal which I wouldn’t have at that point, lost the challenge, gave the oilers a PP up one with little time, got scored on and then lost in OT and subsequently lost the series. Questionable challenge at best.

Slept on it, still pissed.

WHY? Usually, when you cannot answer a question, it's because you're wrong.

Like, what the hell would he actually say to McKenna post-game?

Ummmm, yeah... , you've been playing great, really turned it on of late but...... I don't know...... yeahhhhhhhhh... ummmmmmmmmmmm.... yeah....... I don't know........ okay............ yeah... so ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.... right. Okay, see you at practice!

Gonna chalk this up to everyone has room to improve and develop, including the coaching staff's decision making under pressure. Not an ideal result, but the silver lining is no one here is on the rookie's case for anything.

I suspect Hiller is covering - not wanting to bring any negative attention to his young player.
Ice time is an enormous deal to the players.
You cannot reasonably 'forget' a player on your bench for half a game.

A criticism of Hiller is that he coaches 'not to lose' - he is cautious and tries to avoid mistakes. Whether we agree with it or not, maybe that is what went on here.

I looked at Quinn's '99 team. No of those young players were 18. Kaberle was the youngest 'regular' at 20, Berard 21 & Markov 22 - which are young ages for dmen.

Me too.

Rewatched that 4th Sabres goal, where Roslovic and especially Nylander played matador "defense" in the neutral zone. If anyone should have been benched, it was probably Nylander after that play. If that's how the forwards are going to help protect a lead, there is no hope.

88 34 96 were absolute trash on the 4th goal. Maybe due to them being gassed.

Rielly was too busy cuddling with the guy in front of the net on the 3rd goal.
