1 coach down. Could there be 2 today? Rumours suggest Paul Maurice will be replaced by Milwaukee's Kirk Muller. Interesting day.

Could even be 3, really. I can't imagine Carlyle will be holding on to his position for very long.

I haven't really followed Hunter's coaching style in London to make an accurate assumption (no one can dispute the success enjoyed), but based on his personality and playing style, I am not sold he is the best fit for Ovechkin.  I don't know if Ovechkin has it in him to work his butt off.

Then again, this may be the best thing that happens to Ovechkin's career.

And I too wouldn't be surprised to see both Maurice and/or Carlyle fired within the next day or two.  Both need to go.

A pretty impressive record by Boudreau, he just wasn't getting it done this year. Hunter's record in the OHL is just as impressive:

Hunter has coached the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League for 11 seasons, compiling a 451-189-23-24 record. He became the fastest coach in OHL history to reach 300 and 400 career wins.

I think this is one of those cases that a lot of Wilson's defenders will be horrified to see. There's no real reason to believe Hunter is a better coach than Boudreau but there's an argument to be made that just making the change is going to light a fire.

I've never seen a better example of a team quitting on a coach like the Caps did to Boudreau this season.  The performance of Ovechkin has been utterly pathetic given his talent.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: CAR fires Paul Maurice, Kirk Muller is the new guy.

@DarrenDreger: Not easy decision for Rutherford to fire Maurice....again. Longtime friends. Maurice's contract expires end of year.

Not surprising.

I was hearing a bit earlier this year that teams would have difficulty picking up coaches like Muller and MacT mid-season as they coach affiliates of other teams.  I suppose teams wouldn't stand in the way, but it also makes your competitors better.

Does something like that require compensation?

CBA specifically prohibits compensation for teams hiring coaches and other front office staff from other organizations. Teams do, of course, have to get their current employer's permission to speak to them and sign them first.

With two coaches down today, I really believe Carlyle is out of Anaheim before the end of the week. I can't believe how bad they looked last night.

You've got to feel for all these coaches losing their jobs with the knowledge that if their GMs had just got off their rear-ends and acquired Mike Zigomanis they wouldn't be in this scenario.

I like both Maurice & Boudreau but don't fault their  organizations for trying a change.

Here's some articles on Boudreau from Wash Post:
Bruce Boudreau became the something that had to be done

Capitals fire Bruce Boudreau; Dale Hunter named new head coach

Boudreau had been successful changing their style rather dramatically over his time there. But it appears he'd lost the room.

Haven't found much in the Carolina media yet on Maurice (they haven't had a lot of time yet):
Canes fire head coach Paul Maurice

I know Habs fans will be upset if Muller gets the job in Carolina, they were high on Kirk and hoping he'd take over in Montreal.

God, I hope this doesn't mean another media gig for Maurice... at least not up here. I found him to be as dull as ditch water.

If the leafs fire Wilson, they should hire Maurice again.  I'd like to see what he could do with a talented roster.

He may be a good coach, but, I wouldn't go back into
the past, so to speak, and hire Maurice again.  In fact, if it ever came down to it, I'd go with Boudreau.  He
wouldn't have too much of a problem  since the Leafs are proving themselves good offensively, and don't think
he would have a problem either in trying to improve
them defensively.

Besides, he wouldn't have to deal with 'Ovechkin-sized egos'.

markhmasters: RT @43_Kadri Big congrats to my junior coach dale hunter on the coaching job in wash. Well deserved #goingproagain

Queue the Kadri to Washington rumours. :P
