I've never seen this before but why does Chara's cap hit change in 2017-18?

http://www.capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=216

His cap hit is $6,916,667 until then, but for whatever reason it changes to $4M the last season?

Any ideas how or why that's allowed?

Found this:

"Under the league's new "Kovalchuk" rule, Chara's new contract will be cut off (for the purposes of salary-cap calculation) in the year of the contract in which he turns 41. That means Chara, who will turn 41 on Mar. 18, 2018, will have an annual salary cap hit of $6.9 million for the first six years of the deal -- $400,000 more than what would be if it were calculated over the seven years of the contract. The cap hit then drops to his actual salary ($4 million) in the final year."

Thanks for that!

Maybe I am misinterpreting it, but how is that the Kovalchuk rule?  What I get out of that is that after the players 41st bday, the cap hit drops to their actual salary- so Kovalchuks cap hit would be like $1M?

But because of that, his cap hit is actually higher in the years leading up to 41.

They changed the rules after Kovalchuk's contract with the Devils.

Brooks Laich has guaranteed the Caps will be in the playoffs.

Yahoo Link

I think the main Yahoo Sports Canada page goes a little overboard when they proclaim "Laich pulls a Messier", when in fact, Messier made a guarantee and then backed it up. As far as I can tell, Caps still have a couple of games left and their future is far from decided....

Speaking from experience the hockey Gods have never been big on proclamations / guarantees...this will be interesting

Just was reminded of it -- remember the CBJ/LA game when the clock froze with 1.8 seconds left only to see the Kings tie it (and subsequently win it) as a result?  How huge do those 2 points look now in the standings.  Yikes.

Nobody has commented yet on the Ryan Clowe 'play' from last night?

What should the NHL do about Ryan Clowe?

It's probably too harsh, and definitely not something the NHL will do, but I'd consider taking the points away from San Jose for Clowe's actions. It should have been a game misconduct and major penalty if the ref's had caught it at the time, but they didn't and San Jose should be forced to forfeit that game as far as I'm concerned.

There's no guarantee LA would have done anything on that play, or that they would have won the game, but there is no way something like this can be allowed. Player's need to know that this type of action is unacceptable and the team will be punished, not just a small suspension for the player.

It would have probably only been a 2 minute penalty for too many men on the ice. It's no different than when a ref misses any other minor penalty, there's no way he should have been suspended for it.

John Tortorella was fined $20,000 for his comments about the Penguins being the most arrogant organization in the league and calling Crosby and Malkin whiners. You can see what he had to say here:

I don't necessarily agree with his statements, but I suppose the league doesn't want these sort of comments in the media so whatever. Fining him $20,000 though when the maximum any player can receive is $2,500 is nuts in my opinion.

Yeah thought that was pretty excessive, even if the whining about whining is annoying.  I think they're just trying to get under Crosby/Pens skin a bit, but like you said, I don't really agree with the comments.

Nothing to be ashamed of this so-called NHL award -- the Lady Byng.

THN's Adam Proteau, Toronto-born sportswriter ( and the only one who pegged the Leafs to finish in 8th), explains why The Lady Byng award is something proud to win.

Here is his article.  I fully agree.

...the actual Lady Byng was the wife of a Canadian war hero and former Governor-General. That?s admirable enough, but her request that the award be given to a player who embodies on-ice respect and dignity is even more reason to celebrate it...

I don't follow Simmons but this tweet was emailed to me;

RT @simmonssteve A crazy stat pointed out by @TSNDaveHodge this morning. Crosby had more assists (29) than Ovechkin did (27) in 56 fewer games played.
