Apparently Nino Niederreiter has requested a trade.  Not sure I blame him after leading their AHL team in scoring at 20 and not even being invited to camp, although it's not totally indefensible after not doing much with the big club last season.

Last season, he got 4th line minutes with almost no PP ice time. So I can excuse his lack of production to some extent. But his team second worst -29 accrued in so few minutes might suggest he's got a serious problem with his defensive game (I hardly saw him play so I'm not positive).

Wouldn't mind taking a look but he's probably got to spend some more time in the AHL rounding out his game.

Colborne for Nino? I'd do that in a second. They could have Franson too for all I care.

Apparently the Isles have said they won't be moving him.

Phx said same thing about Turris, all it is is leverage

Turris had more leverage as a NHLer.

Niederreiter has two seasons of waiver exemption left so the Isles can let him sit and sulk earning $67,500 per season in the AHL. He's in a tougher spot.

The Devils just shut out the Flyers 3-0. The Flyers are the first team to start this season 0-3. They've scored a total of 3 goals and allowed 11 (3.67 GAA). Could this be the first of the anticipated playoff teams to get off to a terrible start that jeopardizes their chances of making the playoffs?

Stuff like this helps our Leafs stay in the hunt.

If they don't turn things around in a hurry, it could certainly put them behind the 8-ball. A bad opening 10 games can really kill a team in a shortened season.

I don't know if it's been posted already or not, but on McCowan's show a few days ago, it was said that during the last lockout-shortened season, only one team that was out of a playoff spot after 10 games made the playoffs that year.

Yea sorry, was talking about leverage as in trade value. Some GM's will lie through their teeth if need  be, like when Don Maloney took the steadfast position that he wouldn't trade Turris.

54 pts in 48 game schedule is equivalent to 92 pts in and 82 game schedule and roughly 92 pts puts a team on the cusp of making the playoffs.

If a team starts 1-7-2 in their first 10 for example, they have to play .658 the rest of the way to get 54 pts. In an 82 game schedule, they have to play .611 the rest of the way to get 92 pts.

Last season, only four teams played better than .658 hockey and the season before that only one team (since the lockout 2-3 teams on average) while 10 teams played better than .611 hockey last year and 8 the year before that.

A bad start or even a bad stretch is tougher to recover from in a shorter season.

Conversely, an 8-2 stretch combined with .500 hockey the rest of the way, gets a team 54 pts in a 48 game schedule. One might argue that if a few teams who most penciled in as making the playoffs get off to lousy starts (in part due to the lockout/short training camps), a team like the Leafs who most have on the outside looking in have a better shot at making the playoffs.

At this stage of the season, with so many picking the Leafs to miss, I'm playing the Hope card!!  :)

Detroit losing bodies fast... RT @andystrickland: Told Ian White's cut leg went through the muscle #redwings #NHL

Colaiacovo is out with a shoulder problem (on IR). Kindl had had groind trouble (on IR). And Ericsson has had shoulder trouble.

Franson, who the Wings have been rumored to be interested in, might be a respectable short term  replacement for White.

Colaiacavo's injured? What a surprise ::)

According to Ansar Khan of MLive.com, Ian White will miss the next two to three weeks following surgery on his lacerated thigh. White went under the knife Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: Jakub Kindl is due back for Friday's tilt with the Minnesota Wild.

UPDATE: Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports the Detroit Red Wings have signed UFA defenseman Kent Huskins to a one-year, one-way deal.

UPDATE: According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland said he is working on signing a veteran and hopes to use the defenseman in Tuesday's home opener against the Dallas Stars. Holland doesn't care to identify the player until the deal is official.

Only 8355 fans came to see hockey in Phoenix last night. There is no way the franchise can survive with numbers like that. To get from 14 to 17k only once a week (Sat or Sun) is not good enough.
