I think I can understand Yakupov's celebratory spectacle given that it was his first overtime NHL goal, that gave his team it's first victory of the season, plus it came against the defending Stanley Cup champion L.A. Kings.

Maybe he overdid it but perhaps his accomplishments justified his enthusiasm.  If it hadn't been overtime, I doubt he would have had so much reason to celebrate.
I don't think it was overtime, he tied it with four seconds left.

My mistake.  Sam Gagner scored the OT winner.

Still, haven't seen a  celebration quite like that in a long while!

That's because usually, players in the NHL have scored a goal before.

It was super offensive.
Cherry was actually bang on last night regarding this. Not only does it hurt Nail but it gets the other team angry and riles them up. That's the last thing you want to do.

Simon Gagne had a tumour the size of a tennis ball removed from his neck during the summer. He is now healthy and headache free. #nhl

:o

Geez, glad to hear he is ok and healthy now !

And the Kings were so riled up they went on to win the game in OT
Thanks Don spot on analysis as always.

Like it's been said; Don't like the other guy's celebration? Don't let him score.

I do think, though, that Theo Fleury's goal is a cautionary tale. If Theo Fleury didn't do that crazy celebration after scoring the OT winner in game 6, how in the world could the Oilers have gotten motivated for game 7 of a playoff series?

But isn't Cherry a lot like, say, a Rush Limbaugh...like 10% of what they say has any real value or merit, and the other 90% is just bluster for the sake of self promotion?

He really doesn't bother me since I think he's mostly just entertainment, rather than a really relevant opinion.

Basically. When he's not talking about protecting the players health/safety or about supporting the troops, he should pretty much be disregarded.

I don't think anyone is taking Cherry particularly seriously, just pointing out how crazy he sounded.

The shame of it is that I genuinely think that 15 years ago or so Coach's Corner was legitimately 50/50 in terms of occasionally interesting hockey commentary and Cherry being a character. Now it's 90/10 Cherry being a nutjob/bragging about how he knew John Tavares would be a good player.

He should have had more respect for his opposition.  You know.  Slash them.  Hit them from behind.  Take a long run and hit them in the head to cause a concussion.  Jump a guy from behind to start a fight.

You know, all the classy things that hockey players do.  None of that disrespectful celebration after scoring a goal garbage.  That's just awful.

But punches to the face only hurt physically.

Watching a goal celebration.....that hurts on the inside.  :'(

Visnovsky will report to NYI no later than Feb 11th, possibly sooner, due to personal medical reasons within his immediate family.

The "personal medical reasons" had to do with his son's illness.

Listening to Gillis being interviewed during the intermission on TSN is putting me to sleep. The man is absolutely monotone and so incredibly dull.

So, maybe a weird season like a lot have been saying?

Sure, if you accept the premise that a hockey game is the least likely to be won by the better team of any major sport.

That said if that's true I think it brings up more interesting questions than just who's going to make the playoffs this year.

Not to mention he always looks like he spent the night sleeping in a ditch.

Yeah, I'm not entirely convinced of that.

Me either to be honest. The study the article links to in support of that makes a decent case for it but it's certainly not something I'd take as a given.

That said, I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
