Heard something about O'Reilly demanding a trade, and the Avs wanting to trade him to the East.

Where do you guys think his destination is going to be?

Hate to say it but I can see Bryan Murray going HARD after O'Reilly. The Senators are really, really weak down the middle even with Spezza, never mind when he's out long-term with an injury.

That strikes me as relatively unlikely. While it makes some sense with Spezza out, when Spezza comes back the Sens have him, Turris and Zibanejad all at centre. If you add O'Reilly to that mix then you have A) either Turris or O'Reilly as a third line centre which probably doesn't work out financially in the long term or B) assuming Zibanejad isn't dealt for O'Reilly, you're basically limiting him to 4th line duties once Spezza comes back.

Personally, I see New Jersey or Florida as better fits.

Heard some talk earlier about Florida trading Weiss which would make a deal for O'Reilly make more sense for the Panthers.

Knowing the Blue Jackets, it wouldn't surprise me to see them go for an experienced assistant GM with no GM experience for the job.

Columbus is in a unique situation when it comes to their GM position. Like you said, John Davidson is running the show there. A guy like Brian Burke isn't going to want that job and have to answer to him. Another reason why it likely won't be an established GM.

There's only 30 NHL GM positions. If offered, I say Burke takes that job in a heartbeat.

Don't you suppose, though, that assuming Burke still has a degree of credibility and might be a candidate for multiple future openings that he can afford to be a little bit choosy in where he goes? I don't think the Blue Jackets situation is a mess the way Busta does but in terms of prestige and having the sort of budget you'd want to work with it has to be right near the bottom in terms of desirability for a guy like Burke.

edit: Oh, and most of the speculation I've seen is that this finnish character, Jarmo Kekalainen is very much in the running for the job.

Sure, but there will other GMs fired before the beginning of the off season, and at least one will be in a more appealing situation for Burke.

Asking price is supposedly a roster player and a top prospect. So, hopefully, not here.

Washington could sure use a shakeup.  Think they'd be willing to send one of their underachieving stars (Backstrom?  Green?) to Colorado for O'Reilly straight up?

Admittedly, I'm only looking at numbers here but are either guy really the problem there? Backstrom's got 10 points, Green's got 7. The Caps are scoring goals, they just seem incapable of preventing them. Adding O'Reilly doesn't really seem like a move in that direction.

Trying to remember a European GM in the NHL, is this a first?

I believe so, yes. There have been European AGMs, but I don't believe there have been any European GMs.

So this guy must know a lot about the players in the NHL? Or is it just his overall hockey IQ?

Well, he was the head scout for the Blues for a while and was fairly high up in the scouting staff in Ottawa. It's not like this is his first NHL gig or anything.

Oh okay, this is why I asked, I wouldn't know him if I hit him with my truck (In the words of Pat Burns).

I know they are a deep team, but Boston was the first team that came to mind for O'Reilly.  They'd have to shuffle things around in terms of fitting everyone comfortably in their positions and I am not too certain which roster player and prospect they'd move, but I can see them finding a way to make it all work.

Probably the Irish thing. :P Seriously, though, the Bs are pretty deep down the middle with Seguin, Krecji, Bergeron, Kelly and Peverly. I don't see them paying the price for a player they really don't need. At best, they'd move Seguin to the wing and O'Reilly becomes their 3rd line centre.

That's not guaranteed, nor is it guaranteed that if a GM is fired that it's a place he'll want to go. I also not sure that being the GM of the Blue Jackets is such a terribly unappealing job opportunity.

While Burke does have the advantage in that he can be a bit choosy right now, he doesn't strike me as the sort who wants to sit on the sidelines for an extended time.

If I were Burke I'd retire. It looks like everything that happened during his tenure in Toronto took about 20 years off his life.
