Real_ESPNLeBrun: Spoke with Jackets prez John Davidson. He's NOT taking over as GM. Has a short list of candidates.

FriedgeHNIC: Well, there's a kibosh on that one RT @Aportzline Just spoke with Dave Taylor. Said he will not be the next GM of the Blue Jackets.

Obviously the record mandated a change but I think Howson, considering the restraints on him, left the Blue Jackets reasonably well situated for the future.

Francois Giguere, Doug Risebrough, Craig Button, Rick Dudley, and of course Brian Burke come to mind as possible candidates to replace Howson.

I doubt Button is considered. He's been out of that part of the game for a long time for a reason. I'm a little surprised Giguere hasn't found a job in the almost 4 years he's been without a gig. Risebrough's resume isn't particularly impressive, which, of course, makes him perfect for Columbus. I doubt the Habs would let Dudley go that quickly, and I doubt Burke would be all that interested in such a low profile job or with a team that's in that big a mess after his time here.

Knowing the Blue Jackets, it wouldn't surprise me to see them go for an experienced assistant GM with no GM experience for the job.

Burke took the Anaheim job which wasn't exactly high-profile. Plus, he may want to take on the  challenge. However, still sticking to my prediction that Regier gets fired in Buffalo and Burke takes over the Sabres. Columbus doesn't seem like the team that would go for such a high-profile guy.

Anaheim was a team in a much better position than Columbus, and being akin to LA's version of Mississauga, was a higher profile gig than we probably give it credit for. After what happened to him here, I doubt he'd want to take on a team in that kind of mess so soon. Columbus and Burke just doesn't feel like a fit.

What mess? There's a ton of cap room, no train wreck contracts, good young players, some pretty good prospects in the system...leaving aside the inherent problems with trying to complete in Columbus what makes it a bad situation?

Ferguson eh?

To be fair to Ferguson, he did prove to be a prolific drafter. Looking at how the Leafs fared in 05-07 versus in 08 with Fletcher, he definitely knew what he was doing.

Obviously he'll never live down the Rask/Toskala trades but he was intelligent enough to go to ownership with a proposed rebuild strategy after the lockout, which they denied him.

Also, for what it's worth, if the season ended today and assuming the lottery didn't change things the Blue Jackets would have the 2nd, 3rd and 14th picks in the draft.

Gotta think Lindy Ruff's tenure as Buffalo's coach could be nearing an end.

I don't know. I'm not sure he goes anywhere as long as Regier is still GM.

Wouldn't be surprising.

When I was at the game in Buffalo at the end of January many fans were grumbling it was time for Ruff to go and to bring in a fresh voice.

Columbus is in a unique situation when it comes to their GM position. Like you said, John Davidson is running the show there. A guy like Brian Burke isn't going to want that job and have to answer to him. Another reason why it likely won't be an established GM.

Who else's picks do they have? (Rangers? Kings?)

Bingo. Carter and Nash deals.
