Everything sounded just fine before they changed again.  The "Metropolitan" Division sounds more suitable for say, baseball, rather than hockey.  I'm going by the name, mostly.

Next thing we know, there will be a "Bettman" Division!

The Metropolitan division sounds like something you'd find in Arena Football.

Yeah these geographic names are tacky. Should have just named them after a few of the legends from the past.

That only makes sense. I'm surprised Bettmann didn't name them after the legends in his mind...The Bettmann division East, The Bettmann division West....

Thought this would be interesting to know, for fun, how some of the players from teams in the Atlantic Division have/had been spending vacation time.  Note the dapper Lupul on the red carpet in France...

Pretty sure Lupul was there as a secret agent for the government, foiling an assassination.

What's that?  You didn't hear anything about an attempted assassination at this years Cannes festival?  You're welcome.

Vancouver GM Gillis denies teams were ever interested in Luongo in the first place...

?Ninety-five percent of the stuff that was reported (regarding Luongo) was inaccurate and people made up trades and teams he was being traded to. There was a lot of misinformation out there.?

I guess he's admitting to spreading misinformation?  I suppose there's nothing wrong with that but it would be funny to hear him admit to that exact wording.

Its weird that Vancouver is making up with Luongo yet at the same time telling everyone there really wasn't a market for him.  Why rehash it at all?  Just get on with it......

Because Gillis has no idea how to run a hockey team, or how to tell the truth, or how to even lie effectively.

Just when the Phoenix fiasco settled, now the Devils are in the same boat kind of, although not entirely the same, but none the less the league is taking over another team. Bettman wake up and fold a few teams, 30 is too many and the talent is being spread to thin over 30 teams.

Ouch...

I don't think folding teams is the right way to go though.

Somewhere, the Devs franchise is floating belly-up amongst the flotsam and jetsam of the Raritan River.

Contraction never has been and never will be a serious option. The union would fight against it with every resource available to them. It would mean eliminating potential revenue streams. It's just not something that's realistically on the table outside of being used as a fairly empty threat in negotiations. If anything, the league will be expanding to 32 teams in the next decade or so.

Can't deny it ... but at some point the exigencies of the market reign supreme.  It could be forced down Bettman and the union's collective gullet.

There's still way too many potential options for relocation to attempt before that becomes a problem. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if that's the league's hope - relocate a couple Eastern teams out west and then get some sweet sweet expansion money for a team in Quebec City and another in the GTA.

I don't know if you saw it or not, but about a week ago there was a report that Bettman wanted an expansion team for Seattle as early as 14-15. There's no way we see the number of NHL teams drop below 30 in the next decade.

There's been talk about Seattle for a while now, so that doesn't surprise me. My guess is they'll end up with a relocated team rather than an expansion team, because there's more money in getting an expansion team in a larger Eastern market. There was also talk about one of the co-founders of Microsoft looking into buying the Coyotes so he could move them to Portland, so, my guess is one of them gets a team in the next few years. There were also those rumours about Kansas City a few years ago, so, it wouldn't surprise me if the league revisited that idea. Same with Las Vegas.
