2012 NHL Entry Draft

He's 18 years old guys. I don't think the fact that the Leafs already have offensive defensemen in their system is really all that relevant. He may not play in the NHL for another three years.

I think it's relevant if the pick is being discussed in the context of what the team/system needs.

Hmmm. Not sold on this one at all.

Sigh. We need centres and draft D.
Yes but we also really need a goalie and maybe this makes it possible to trade Gardiner to get Luongo, or something along those lines?

If Burke trades Gardiner for Luongo he'd be crazy even if he'd just drafted Bobby Orr.

I guess that's where we disagree. I don't believe the context of what the team/system needs matters in terms of positional needs. This team needs talented players and if the scouting staff thought he has the most potential, then it's a wise choice.

Gardiner may not improve. Blacker may never make it the NHL, etc.

I think you draft based on best player available and you trade/sign based on organizational need.

Well, it is what it is... Time for some positive vibes;

Rielly scouting report: Like Galchenyuk, he missed most of the season with a torn ACL, playing just 18 games before returning late in the playoffs. Like Dumba, he?s not overly big but is a good skater with offensive ability. Our scout calls him the potential steal of the draft ? ?the best defence prospect since Drew Doughty? ? given his stickhandling and playmaking skills. McKeen?s: Rielly ?possesses similar attributes? to Senators defenceman Erik Karlsson ?as the two play an almost identical skating and puck possession game.?

The question though is would it've been smarter to trade down and risk him being available?

I mean Karlsson was picked at 15 or something no?

Unless we're landing Nash or Parise (unlikely given our cap situation) our forward group will remain underwhelming. Other than Kadri and Colborne we don't really have many forward prospects that are impact players.

On defence? Gardiner/Schenn/Blacker/Holzer/Gunnarson/Franson.

Not all are blue chip D-men, but with Phaneuf as Captain and presumably around for awhile and Liles signed for 4 years it just doesn't make any sense.

I'm truly dumbfounded. Obviously the hope is he becomes the Norris winner, but that's highly unlikely. He alos has injury concerns which is another reason to be worried. UGH...

Perhaps Burke now makes a trade (Mac??) for another pick soon and takes Grigorenko with that?

That'd be ok with me ( Forsberg is still out there too so far, oddly ). Lindholm was kind of surprising.

Seems like a good choice if he's anything like those two mentioned. The key is what kind of on-ice intelligence he displays. We need guys like Karlsson who read the play well and make smart decisions with the puck... and less of guys in the mold of Dion/Schenn/Komisarek.

I think you're missing the point. The TSN folk were specifically discussing the pick in the context of how it relates to the team's current needs.

With all due respect, I think we've seen the wisdom of planning on trading/signing a #1 centre play out in the standings the last three years.

I'm not sure what point I'm missing as I'm just discussing what I think is the wisest strategy for drafting. I'm not discussing what TSN was talking about.
