2013-2014 NHL Thread

7 games is pretty high for a first time offender. Although of course you can argue that the whole first time offender status shouldn't make a difference.

I think the incident should be judged on its own merits first, and then have additional games attached for repeat offenders. I don't think 7 games is enough for what Scott did if the league is really serious about eliminating targeted head shots.

darenmillard: Only in #philly,  ray emery named 3rd star for instigating a line brawl and getting tossed out. Should mention flyers lost 7-0.

DNFlyers: Holmgren says Downie has a concussion from fight. Lecavalier has a facial injury and will miss time.

Yay fighting!

That 7-0 Flyers loss also included a pretty large line brawl in the 3rd period after the final goal:

I'm sorry, but Emery going after Holtby like that was disgusting. And I don't think I've ever said that about another play or event in the NHL before. Emery skates all the way down to the Washington zone with his gloves off and tries to engage Holtby in a fight. Holtby wants nothing to do with it and doesn't remove his gloves. Eventually Emery just goes after him anyway and the one refs tries to keep them apart but can't so he lets them go. Emery threw 14 punches in the "fight", a lot of them to the back of Holtby's head while Holtby was on his knees. Holtby didn't throw a single punch.

That wasn't a fight, Emery just beat the crap out of a defenceless player. And just going through my twitter feed real quick, nobody seems to give a crap. It was essentially the equivalent of Scott going after Kessel except the fight actually happened and everybody on the ice was too preoccupied to notice. If he's not suspended I'll be speechless.

Yeah. Emery is basically a thug in goalie equipment. I mean, it's not like there was a huge brawl going on when he charged down the ice - it looks like there was really only the one fight going on, and, then, when Emery decided he need to pound on Holtby, a bunch of other fights broke out. Just ridiculous.

Emery on fighting Holtby: "He didn?t want a fight but I said basically protect yourself. I didn?t really have much of a choice"

Well, that should go over well in his suspension hearing. And if he's not suspended, I honestly hope we just start to see goons beat the crap out of players who don't want to fight. As long as they tell them before hand that it's going to happen it's all good apparently.

"I skated all the way down the ice because there was a fight going on. I didn't have my gloves with me, and everyone else on the ice was watching the other fight and had their back to me. What was I supposed to do, not fight the other goalie? Come on, man. I didn't have much choice. I don't control my body at all. It just does what it does, and I'm just along for the ride."

I wish he just started punching reporters after that.

Probably one of the stupidest quotes I can remember seeing in recent times.

Jesus.  If there's a line between fighting and assault, I think that crosses it.  I honestly wouldn't blame Holtby if he wanted to press actual charges.

Please also discipline the linesman for just standing there doing absolutely nothing even though it was clear that Holtby wanted no part of it.  Those punches to the back of the head are really dangerous.

I agree one hundred percent on your assessment of the Emery/Holtby 'fight'.  That very definitely was no fight, just someone (Emery) hell bent on beating the crap out of someone else (Holtby) for the fun of it and/or by deliberation.

The Flyers' line's specific intent was deliberate, as one can see, Simmonds practically went looking to instigate such a brawl in the first place.

With the acqisition of Steve Downie,  what is the Flyers modus operandi?

3rd star with a .733 save percentage (4 goals on 15 shots).

Emery is an ass...., everyone knows rthat, but I am disgusted by the referee who just stood there and watched Holtby being hit multiple times to the back of his head.  Would he stood there motionless till Emery beats him unconscious? This was a disgrace. Emery did not fight, this was pure assault punishable under the civil law.

Ok ..... I'm a big fan of fighting in Hockey, but that was not it. Emery was just hitting on someone who was not into it. A fight is two guys willing to go at it. This is what we need out of the game, not the real fights. I hope he gets ten games. This is a black eye for fighting, and will only fuel up the pansies who are trying to dissect our game. As Don says, there is an unwritten code with the players, and the ones crossing it are the ones we need to kick out of this game. Stevie played the game and knows the code, so if he lived by it when giving out the suspensions, as well as point it out to any player that crosses that line, it would go a long ways in cleaning up things.

I think the NHL has a real responsibility here to throw the book at Emery because, otherwise, how could you possibly argue against someone on the Capitals coming off the bench?

agreed..clarkson goes on to protect hotlby and it's 10 games..that does seem harsh for trying to stop an assault

The unwritten code is being crossed. these players need to be reminded of it somehow. this crap will end when the players get reminded that there are lines you don't cross, lines that have been there as long as the game. Maybe  this new breed of players need to sit down with some of the older retired guys and have a chat.
