2013-2014 NHL Thread

Speaking of St.Louis and his 4-goal game Saturday against the Sharks...

-St-Louis, 38, became the oldest player in league history to score a hat trick in one period. He also became the second-oldest player to score four goals in a game. Johnny Bucyk did it 24 days older than St-Louis in 1974.

Friedman says that Stajan is expected to sign an extension with the Flames today.

FriedgeHNIC: Stajan extension will be four years, $12.5M...AAV is $3.125M

That's actually not a bad deal, really.

Not at all. I thought he might get a slight raise because that's typically how things go. For a two-way 2nd or 3rd line centre that's pretty good.

@LavoieRenaud: Expect the NHL to announce the John Tortorella suspension soon. Only details that I've got: between 3 and 10 games. #canucks

TSNBobMcKenzie: 15-day (6 games) without pay suspension for John Tortorella. $25,000 fine for Bob Hartley.

mirtle: Tortorella "is not permitted to have any interaction with his club prior to, during or after games."

I thought Torts would get a little more, but, I guess that's about right.

Team is gonna respect him so hard when they get to see him again after his league-mandated absence.

;D

All sociopaths get a certain kind of respect, when you think about it....

Hartley better keep his head on a swivel the next time the Canucks play the Flames.  Glen Gulutzan is going to send a message by taking out Martin Gelinas.

It seems that Jets are moving their affiliate AHL team from St John?s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario next year. Financially it makes sense, it saves Jets organization lots of money having AHL team much closer. Poor fans in Newfoundland they are loosing team after team despite great attendance numbers.

Do the financials work even if Thunder Bay doesn't sell much in the way of tickets?

Nik, I am not advocating this move, but I guess it does work. They most likely earn significantly less on ticket sales, marchandise etc. but save a lot on travel expenses. In grand total it most probably pays off, otherwise they would not be moving the team, right?

Well, unless the thinking is that the reduced wear and tear of the travel on players offsets the financial hit they take and the advantage they gain is a competitive, rather than financial, one.

Edit: Which, if I remember correctly, was the argument that was made when the Leafs moved the SJ Maple Leafs to Toronto. It was hailed as a move that would cost the team money but showed how the ownership group was willing to sacrifice dollars for the good of the team. I would be curious, though, to see if that had any real or tangible benefit.

That may be very true. Not sure how to measure whether reduced travel translated into better performance, but I do remember Burke saying several times that having the affiliate team in Toronto helped in signing guys like Mueller, Holzer and probably some others. But the Leafs move was very specific and the benefits are much bigger than having team closer/less fatigue etc. The players can rent the appartment in Toronto regardless of being with the Leafs or Marlies (which will not be the case of Jets), the Leafs trainers could work with some Marlies as well (again not the case with the Jets).

No, financially it doesn't make much sense. St. John's leads the American Hockey League in revenues, corporate support, sellouts, charity donations, etc. The move is like the Leafs move, to bring the players closer to home.

Mark Chipman just said Thunder Bay wouldn't happen until likely 2017, and the IceCaps have an agreement for guaranteed one more season after this one.

They will lose on the corporate side of things more than the tickets. they figure that they'll be able to visit more often to watch the prospects.
