2013-2014 NHL Thread

I think that maybe the fairest indication of how LA valued Scrivens isn't where he ranked on a pretty good depth chart but rather what LA could get for him in a league where a lot of teams could use a #1 goalie.

Who to cheer for tonight? Smurfs or Ruins?

Bruins, for the simple reason that it benefits the Leafs more in terms of playoff matchups.

Finishing 3rd in the division and ahead of the Habs gives the Leafs a very favourable chance of facing the Bolts 1st round, whereas finishing with a wild card spot probably guarantees that they see either the Pens or Bruins.

Habs won...I love watching the Bruins fans melt after a defeat to the Habs. Plus I hate the Bruins!!

Nathan MacKinnon's been heating up, has been playing at a PPG+ for a little over a month now.

Man, Jagr's amazing.  Still on pace for close to 70 points at age 41 and doing it on the offensively-challenged Devils.

I skimmed this comment and for a moment thought it said he was on pace for 41 points at age 70.  That would be even more impressive.

At this point...I wouldn't be surprised.

He has a lot of milestones that are still in reach if he plays another year and doesn't completely fall off a cliff.  I think his game for the most part translates well to continuing to play.  He still has a lot of lower body strength (although not as dominant as he once was).  And he uses his puck control and on-ice vision to get points rather a guy who relies on streaking up the ice to score quick goals.

Upcoming milestones:
  • 2 goals away from 700
  • Gartner (708), Esposito (717), Dionne (731), Hull (741).  It would be a stretch for him to score 43 more goals in his career but if he could, it would put him top 3 in career goal scoring.
  • 1038 assists
  • Dionne (1040), Howe (1049), Yzerman (1063), Oates (1079).  If he puts up another 41 assists, Jagr would move to 6th all time in assists
  • 1736 points
  • Yzerman (1755), Dionne (1771), Francis (1798).  52 points away from 4th all time in NHL scoring.  54 points away from 1800 points.
  • 197 PP goals...3 away from 200

One heck of a career.

And unfortunately like a few of the greats (Lemieux, Forsberg, Orr, Lindros) the big 'what if' question will follow him around for a very long time. He would have already passed all those milestones you mentioned if he didn't go to the KHL for 3 seasons.

Yup. If he plays those 3 seasons in the NHL, he's probably 2nd in career points and 3rd in career goals already, with potential to pass Howe for 2nd in goals, as well.

I don't think it'll follow him around too much. With those other guys the question is what could they have done if healthy. With Jagr we can all see what he was and what he accomplished in both leagues. I'd have a hard time with anyone who didn't think that Jagr was one of the top 4 or 5 offensive players of all time by virtue of spending a couple years in the KHL.

Bobby Hull, I guess, is the comparison but even then his career is pretty neatly divided in two.

Edmonton Oilers - worst run franchise in the NHL?

They apparently want more draft picks this year at the deadline rather than acquiring players who might actually make their team better.

I've always though it was between them and Winnipeg. Hiring MacTavish as GM probably gives them the nod though.

I completely forgot to check if my line-up needed to be set for tonight's game, but then I remembered that I typically don't take players off crappy teams.

Considering where they are this season can you really fault them for thinking they've got a lot more work to do?

Hello? New York Islanders? Garth Snow LOL

I'm not giving him the GM of the Year award or anything, but I'd take Snow over those other two GMs. They seem completely oblivious as to where their teams problems are.
