2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

The 2013 Blue Jays look eerily similar - in initial expectation, to performance to, heck, even the actual players - to the 2012 Florida Marlins.  Not suggesting this can be pinned on the ex-Marlins, but there's obviously something about putting a bunch of good players on a team that sometimes just doesn't work.  Yet, other times, it does (see Yankees mid 1990's to present).

I think the real problem with the Jays, and to an extent last year's Marlins, isn't so much that their additions haven't worked out but really more that they haven't been able to combine acquiring established talent with growing their own. The reason the Yankees have been successful is because they were able to build and retain a core of talent in guys like Jeter and Rivera and Cano while adding high priced talent. The Jays didn't wait for that core to develop before they started selling the talent in the system.

So the bullpen choked on that lead last night, after using 6 of 7 pitchers the night before because of JJ's debacle.

Two questions: Why did Gibbons not go to the one reliever who didn't pitch the night before.. and second, with as lousy as the starters have been, why do they not have at least one long reliever who can go 3+ innings and stave off having to gas the entire staff because of one bad starter's outing???

At this point, having McGowan stretch out to a 3-4 inning guy seems feasible and would be a very good next move towards him possibly returning to the rotation next year.

Gibbons doesn't seem to have any interest in adapting. Just keeps throwing the same mess out there and waddling out once every few innings to change the pitcher.

I couldn't picture at the beginning of the year that if this season were to go off the rails, it'd get this bad.  The players are becoming unlikable and it is annoying seeing them with ear-to-ear grins even when they are getting spanked around.

They came into this season with the attitude that they were the S**T and acted like it was all just going to happen for them.  Bautista was quoted at some point as saying "what could go wrong?" You just knew that was like the bad omen.

When did he say that?  I'm finding references to it, but I'm interested in reading the article if it's from one.

I will see if I can dig it up. It was a radio interview, likely from the Fan.

Still looking for the interview but here is another reference to the quote" http://babesdigballs.com/the-bro-blog-jays-at-the-halfway-mark-terry-maughan/"

Two wins vs. the hapless Astros.. well, yeah you sure better win those games.  Astros look like the Jays looked vs. the Dodgers: Dominated by a team at a whole different level than you are.

EE's two HR's in one inning was pretty awesome though.  Also it appears Dickey can't pitch at Rogers Centre.  Minor issue. :P

It's not much of a bright spot, I know, but Rasmus is having a very good season. BR has him at a 3.5 WAR and Fangraphs has him at 3.8 which ties him for 17th among all big league position players.

Yeah. A lot of people have trouble seeing past his strikeout totals, but, he's having a solid offensive season while playing excellent defence in a premium position.

I was at the game yesterday. First game in years!

Bright spot: The kids and wife loved their first ball game

Not so Bright Spot: Josh Johnson Stinks
