2013 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

At the end of the 11-game win streak, the Jays were two games over .500 and half a game up on the Rays.

Now they are 8 games under while the Rays are leading the wild card and have 13.5 games on us.

Sums things up nicely.

A "heartwarming gesture" indeed...

5-1 today after Happ goes 7 innings only allowing 1 run.

No words left to express what a disaster this team is.

They're just trying to improve their draft position.

Lets just hope they actually sign this pick this time.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say they draft a HS pitcher. There is also a small chance AA drafts a really speedy, defensive, athletic OF who can't hit worth a crap.

Yeah what was that all about? I don't understand the MLB draft... don't get your guy signed by "X" date and he just walks.  So the kid is back to being undrafted now?

Not exactly. A HS player who doesn't sign can't re-enter the draft until, I think, after his junior year of University. The Jays receive compensation in the form of a first round pick next draft one spot lower than where they drafted the unsigned player.

Many of us are probably quite fed up with the Jays' woes.  Looking toward next season, the team carries forward a certain amount of youth (with a question mark). Thought this article was insightful explaining the situation the Jays brass will need to address...

Which players currently not with the big club are most likely to help the jays in 2014? Hutchison? Drabek? Romero? Are there any youngsters in the system ready to step in and make an impact?

Generally speaking...prospects get general managers fired. For every top prospect that has fulfilled his potential, there are dozens that never lived up to expectations...never consider a rookie or young player to be the answer to a need going into the season.

...no matter how good a young pitcher may be, it's only fair to expect him to be a fifth starter with a .500 record. For a position player, it's only fair to expect him to be a seventh hitter in their lineup. Any production you get over that is icing on the cake.

Young players may have the same tools and talent that veterans do, but consistency is the challenge for prospects. Often times great performances are followed by clunkers. It is the nature of being a young player.

So next year Drew Hutchison and/or Kyle Drabek may be considerations for the roster returning from injuries, but they're not predictable upgrades over any pitchers this year.

When Alex Anthopoulos puts his roster together for next year and wants to sell an improved team to the fans, he will need predictable veterans to sell not rookies.

As far as Ricky Romero is concernec, he may be a competitor for a spot in the rotation but he's as unpredictable as any young player the Jays have.

In order to sell a different result to the fans next year, the Jays need experience not youth.

Thanks.  So they basically get to re-draft, but a year later.

Bascially, except the compensation pick isn't protected like that. If they don't sign the guy they draft with that pick next year, they lose it.

4-2 Boston on a two-run double by Shane Victorino in the 11th.

Jays had plenty of chances in the closing inning but stranded runners in scoring positions, plus the Sox pitching had them dumbfounded at the same time.

In fact, a "stand-up" slide by Boston's Elesbury in reaching scond base, in the 11th inning, helped stave off a potential Blue Jay defensive double-play, and eventually was scored home for the first of the two runs.

Red Sox played it smart.  Farrell surely outdid Gibbons in this one.

Bonifacio dealt to KC for cash or player to be named later.

Good riddance.
I was excited when we traded for him.

Turns out this year was statistically the worst of his career. He can produce speed and not much else. Can't play any position competently. A frustrating player to watch. Glad he's gone.

Not a bad idea....

Meh.  I get the parallel that the Jays would like to go from the basement to the division lead, and that they acquired high priced talent and bombed, but beyond that I don't see the comparison.  Boston had a completely dysfunctional room, a manager who alienated his team in the first week on the job and a bunch of egos the size of Fenway.  I don't think the Jays are nearly in the same predicament and their problems are much different.

edit: I think the Jays #1 offseason priority should be to take a fundamental look at how they are training their pitching staff. This many injuries to so many arms and over a long period of time can't just be bad luck.  ON top of injuries you have pitchers like Romero and Johnson who just completely lose their stuff.  Something is very wrong.

nice shellacking last night by the worse team in the league. what a disgrace this season is turning out to be.
