2014/15 Roster moves thread

LeafsPR: The @MapleLeafs have recalled forward Brandon Kozun from the @TorontoMarlies on an emergency basis. #TMLtalk

It's probably nothing, but the timing here is a little curious. The Leafs don't play until Thursday, at home against Philly, and the Marlies are at home until Friday. There doesn't seem to have been any real pressing need to make this move now.

Is Kozun on a 2-way deal?  As we know, sometimes they call up these guys to give them some NHL money when they've performed well, but obviously only when they're on the 2-way deals.

How is this an emergency?  Do you have to have 20 skaters for a practice?

I don't know, but, they wouldn't be able to call him up on an emergency basis if there wasn't some kind of potential emergency. It probably means somebody is a gametime decision for Thursday, but, it's just weird that didn't feel they could wait to make the move. At this time of the year, any sort of seemingly out of the ordinary move/timing always puts people on alert, though.

markhmasters: Another maintenance day for Kessel... Kadri (illness) also missing practice today

Well, there's the likely answer.

Technically, teams need to have 2 healthy goalies and 18 healthy skaters at all times - and, by healthy, that means capable of playing in their next game. The league is obviously lenient when it comes to practices.

Maybe because they're no longer going to be up against the cap this year, it's more of a pay reward thing for Kozun?

They've recalled players a bunch of times this season under "emergency conditions" even when there was space on the roster to just do a regular recall. Not sure why, I don't think there are any cap benefits to it. I wouldn't really read too much into the wording there.

The only thing that I can see that gets affected by emergency call-up is how compensation is laid out for spousal/family travel if the Emergency call-up extends beyond 28 days.  It shouldn't affect cap numbers and really only affects other clauses in the CBA.

So I know most people want both moved, but if the Leafs can only move one or the other, or choose only to move one or the other, which one of Kessel or Phanuef would you rather see moved?

I love Phil Kessel, but he would fetch more than Phaneuf.  This isn't about keeping what you want, this about maximizing all assets to rebuild.  I don't think there is any reason we can't reasonably expect both to be moved out before the start of next season.

Hopefully, we can trade both at the draft for some 2015 draft picks and prospects.  The more 2015s the better.
